Description
1962 - Jaguar E-Type Serie 1 3. 8 "Fastroad" Chassis no. 877169 Engine no. R 5191-8 (Matching Number) French collector's registration The best of both worlds in an E-Type that combines enhanced performance, ease of use and handling and rock-solid reliability.
The Jaguar E-Type is renowned for its timeless beauty, so much so that it was one of the few cars to be exhibited at New York's prestigious Museum of Modern Art. Produced from 1961, its design, by Malcolm Sayer and approved by founder Sir William Lyons, drew its inspiration from the aerodynamic lines of the Jaguar D-Types, winners of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Like the XK it replaced, it set a new benchmark for sports cars.
Undoubtedly one of the finest examples we have had the chance to present, this E-Type is also the most versatile of all, thanks to its advanced preparation for exceptional performance and ease of use. Purchased by a major Franco-Swiss collector in 2017, the car will undergo a facelift thanks to the adoption of variable-assist steering, a five-speed Tremec gearbox and more powerful brakes. The changes didn't stop there, however, with an improved cooling system and extensive work on the running gear to optimise handling and feedback to the steering wheel.
The interest of this example lies not only in its preparation. The car was delivered new to Rome in April 1962, in a Carmen Red colour combination with a beige leather interior. Its history is absolutely clear and documented: after its stay in Italy, the car was bought in 1981 by Erich Traber, one of Europe's greatest collectors and director of Etablissements Graber. At the time, the car still wore its original paintwork and interior, and had just over 20, 000 certified kilometres - one of the lowest mileage cars in the world.
This is what appealed to our collector, who wanted to use an exceptional base to build the E-Type of his dreams. Following his purchase, the car was completely restored, the bodywork repainted in this very elegant shade of Burgundy Red with bespoke ostrich leather upholstery. Of course, the carpets, dashboard, centre console and soft top will also receive the same exacting attention.
Serviced just before the sale, this exceptional car is destined for a demanding collector looking for a car capable of covering thousands of kilometres without fear of fatigue. Reliable, high-performance and easy to handle, its looks and refinement should also appeal to those who haven't yet dared to take the plunge into vintage motoring... Don't hesitate any longer, this car, built without cost limits, is an incredible, addictive machine!
