THE FERRARI TESTAROSSA
Ferrari stormed into the mid-80s with a spectacular new supercar that revived one of the most storied names in Maranello history: Testarossa. A 'next generation' Berlinetta Boxer in loose terms, the Testarossa retained its predecessor's amidships-mounted, 5. 0-liter, flat-12 engine, which now boasted a maximum power output of 380bhp at 6, 300rpm, primarily through new 4-valve heads.
While derived from the BBi under the skin, Pininfarina's styling could not have made a more abrupt about-face. Form followed function with the Testarossa's edgy, bold, and brash styling. Weak points of the 512 BBi were addressed by moving the radiators from the front to the side, necessitating the dramatic side-slats that became one of the modern era's most instantly recognizable - and copied - styling devices. On the road, the Testarossa had 180mph performance, yet the flat-12 was refined to the point of being almost docile around town. More spacious and comfortable than the car it replaced, the Testarossa is a remarkably adept Grand Tourer.
The Testarossa was a sales success for Ferrari, and its iconic status jumped when, in 1986, James "Sonny" Crockett (Don Johnson) of TV's Miami Vice wheeled a white Testarossa around neon-bathed Miami streets after his Daytona was blown to bits by a Stinger missile. Does it get more 80s than that?
THE CAR OFFERED
From that poster on your wall and into your garage comes this 1991 Testarossa, representing the final year for the 'original' Testarossa before the 512 TR took its place. This outstanding example is finished in the classic color scheme Rosso Corsa over Beige leather, showing just over 12, 100 miles recorded at the time of cataloguing. Both its condition and records on file reveal this to be a very well-maintained car, with the most recent service completed by Maranello Autosport of Eustis, Florida, in 2023. That work included a full engine-out service with new timing belts and associated parts, intake manifold gaskets, rebuilt fuel distributors, engine detailing, and more, totaling over $22, 000. Additional receipts from 2015 show a major service performed along with replacement of valve guides and seals, to the tune of $18, 170, and the car wears a high-quality Capristo exhaust system. The accompanying CARFAX report shows no reported issues, with regular milage entries from 1992-onward supporting the figure shown on the odometer.
Well preserved and faithfully maintained, this Testarossa represents an exceptional value among 80s exotics, with superb road manners and surprising usability to complement its timeless Pininfarina styling.
