Here we have for sale this low mileage 1986 Land Rover® 90, which we previously sold a number of years ago – due to a change in the previous owners circumstances (funding a new house purchase!) , we are delighted to be able to present it to market once again. The vehicle currently resides on a private plate, which is included in the sale for the new keeper – the original registration being C504 RJR.

So, why did we jump at the chance to purchase this vehicle for our stock list when it was offered back to us? Simply put, this is a high-specification Land Rover® for its year, and also boasts incredibly low mileage for a 39 year old Land Rover® … when one also considers the fact that within 2 years it will also be free from road tax and MOT – with coil springs, a five speed all-synchro gearbox and front disc brakes giving a modern style driving experience- this gives an understanding of why these are becoming so popular against their earlier Series counterparts.

Externally, this military Land Rover® is a handsome brute – the paintwork is nicely finished in the correct fashion and colour and it is pleasing to see that the military style “screw on” lights are all present and correct. It is just about exactly what one would hope to see in purchasing a military Land Rover®, right down to the correct military issue tyres. As outlined above, there is a full compliment of desirable features.

On the inside, the interior of this 90 is really quite smart – with a centre cubby box and front outer deluxe seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. The dash is all very standard which we like to see, right down to that 1980s steering wheel, which are now becoming quite cool. Being a military vehicle, the usual rust issues to door tops one might expect to see are not present here due to high quality “Rocky Mountain” aluminium examples being fitted. The rear is also a smart place to be with a couple of bench seats bringing seating to six people including the driver, and that roll cage ensuring safety for all within. This is a proper family vehicle, and the useful addition of side windows to the canvas affords a much more pleasant passenger experience, giving a light and airy feel, and assisting the driver when turning left and right.

Out on the road, this military Land Rover® gives a dependable drive…. it starts on the button very easily with no smoke from cold and ticks over reassuringly. Whilst it is not going to win any drag races, theres a pleasant and reassuring feel to the rugged, low mileage, diesel unit. It just pulls and pulls and feels like it will go on forever! In the not too distant future, this 90 will qualify for historic status, meaning no road tax or required MOT. At the moment of writing this advert, we are at a real transitional point with this law because we are on the crossover between the Series marque and the Land Rover® 90/ Defender for exemption qualification. The Land Rover® community is aware that it is now possible to drive tax free and without the need for an MOT in a vehicle which is effectively of modern design with coil springs, five speed gearbox, front disc brakes, etc etc. When you couple this with the fact that it is ex-military on a very late release and has therefore had a relatively short road life, you can see the obvious benefits of running a classic vehicle with modern tendencies… it really does make good sense. Remember, of course, that this unit is also free of computers and OBD readers – so despite the creature comforts you can maintain this on your drive with a simple tool set.

In summary, if you are looking for a long-term, soon to be tax and MOT exempt family friend, then this has to be worth considering. We could wax on all day about the benefits of a vehicle like this – but as anyone looking for one of these will already be aware – it really does afford the opportunity to “have the cake” and eat it too.
