We are delighted to present for sale this 1970 Series 2a Crossover, presented in Station Wagon Configuration with Safari Roof, Alpine Lights and Sliding Windows. This particular example is finished, as the photos show, in Marine Blue with Limestone Modular Wheels and Roof. We purchased this old girl due to the fact she has benefitted from a previous rebuild in recent years, which also included the upgrading of the drivetrain for the fitment of a 200TDI unit, alongside power steering too – a desirable bonus.
Externally, this has all the features you’d hope to see, with only some subtle “TDI” badging on the side and rear indicating what lurks beneath the bodywork! There are plenty of period features, such as the bonnet mounted spare, deluxe bonnet with external bonnet catches, vintage number plates, maltese grill, colour coded lamp surrounds, rear mud flaps and grab handles – etc etc. The added benefit of a modern towbar with electrics is very welcome and we are sure those looking to tow would find this Series to be more than adequate for the job… a set of road biased 750 tyres are fitted, on modular wheels… and these are very much needed, as we will outline below.
On the inside, there are three front standard seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. An uprated Evander Wood Steering wheel has been fitted, which both look great and are a little smaller than standard – affording more room to the driver – and in this case, it does not hamper the steering due to the power assistance. The roof has a uniform black headliner, with limestone vents which open to introduce cold air if required. The rear houses a pair of twin bench seats (along with a load mat to the floor to protect against scratches) to bring occupancy to seven people including the driver, and a door card is fitted to the rear door too. As you can imagine, thanks to the fitment of a Safari roof with Alpine Lights and rear sliding windows, the cabin is a light and airy place to be whilst on the move – making it an enjoyable experience no matter where you are sitting, and giving the driver far superior visibility than a standard hard top. A heater with demist is a welcome addition, and will be much appreciated for the upcoming colder weather – the square heater is more powerful and efficient than the earlier round type, and the cabin warms up well… not something which can be often said in a Series.
Out on the road though is where this Series 2a really stands out – the previous keeper opted to have the vehicle stripped down and rebuilt, including a replacement bulkhead and an engine rebuild, photos of which are supplied in the pack. It was at this time the 200TDI was fitted also – and due to the advancing age of the previous keeper, he also opted for power steering to be fitted, which transforms the driving experience – no more heavy steering when doing low speed maneuvers, which is very much appreciated when parking also… it also opens this vehicle up to those who may not have the strength (or the gumption!) to manage without it. Parabolic Springs have been fitted for a superior ride over standard which is most welcome… again due to the previous keeper suffering with back ache and wishing to make the driving experience as pleasant as possible. Free Wheeling Hubs give improved economy and reduce prop shaft and axle wear, which is handy.
Those who follow what we do at HQ will know that it is not necessarily these items which make this Series unique – we often see them on other vehicles – but it is the fact that ALL these items are fitted in ONE vehicle, transforming the drive and making this particular example very accessible… especially to the novice who likes the look of a Series but is apprehensive about living without the modern creature comforts they have become used to in their modern car or later Defender. The 200TDI means normal road speeds can be achieved and maintained – and in truth, it will go far faster than you want to go – those oversized tyres and modulars are very welcome as they extend the gearing and allow that firepower to be used when deemed appropriate. No more arm ache when driving thanks to power steering and the driver will relish the chance to “attack” a bumpy road or rutted field with the uprated suspension – utter luxury if you’ve driven as many “bog standard” Series as we have!
In summary then – if you’ve been wanting to take advantage of MOT and Tax Exempt Series motoring with all the family, but you’ve found it difficult to convince yourself – or found it difficult to convince your wife she could drive one (due to the heavy steering and period engine set ups), then this has to be worth considering. With the added bonus of that previous rebuild in addition the Safari Roof and Deluxe Interior with Evander Wood Steering Wheel – in our opinion, we think you’d struggle to find a more “complete package” than this one.
