We are delighted to present this charming 1970 MGB Roadster, finished in the elegant and timeless shade of Midnight Blue. This example arrived with us from a Wrexham-based MG enthusiast, who part-exchanged it for a 1970 MGB Sebring Replica Roadster – a 60th birthday present to himself.
The previous owner had purchased the car in October 2023 from respected Sheffield restorer, Mr Nigel Falkiner, for £14, 995. Over the course of the following year, he enjoyed around 1, 500 miles of classic motoring before deciding to pass it on.
According to the accompanying Heritage Certificate, this MGB was built between 8th and 13th October 1970 and dispatched to MG dealer Caffyns Ltd of Canterbury on 14th October. Originally finished in Teal Blue with an Autumn Leaf interior, it was factory-specified as a right-hand-drive, home-market car with a black hood, overdrive gearbox, Rostyle wheels, and heater. Pleasingly, it still retains its original Canterbury registration number, VJG 741J.
When the car arrived with us, it was in generally good condition, but a detailed inspection revealed corrosion to the floor pans and crossmembers. To ensure long-term structural integrity, we commissioned local specialists Competition and Classic Engineering to replace these sections, at a cost of £2, 733 in labour alone. As the interior had to be removed for this work, we decided to fully refresh and upgrade it at the same time. We have invested circa. £6. 5k into this preparing this car for sale which does not include our own labour costs - details of most of the invoices for various parts purchased are detailed below.
Today, the car presents beautifully in its rich Midnight Blue paintwork, complemented by a set of new 16-inch Minilite-style alloy wheels wrapped in Avon ZT7 tyres. A newly refurbished black hood, smart black interior, and bright chrome with a gentle patina complete the look. Inside, the cabin feels fresh and inviting, with new carpets, door cards, centre console, and armrest, along with refurbished seats fitted with inertia seat belts. The black metal dashboard features new oil and temperature gauges, and a Pioneer Bluetooth/ CD stereo discreetly brings the soundtrack of your choice to accompany the unmistakable MGB exhaust note.
Mechanically, this MGB is a delight. It starts readily from cold, runs with excellent oil pressure, shifts smoothly through the overdrive gearbox, and offers the lively, robust driving experience for which these cars are so loved. The body is strong, paintwork good, the front chrome bumpers and grille are newly fitted, and the stainless steel exhaust adds a crisp note to the drive. The V5C lists the colour as black, and in certain light it does appear so, but the true colour is Midnight Blue.
Although the history file is not fully comprehensive, it clearly shows that this car has been well cared for and cherished over the years. The car has been independently inspected, freshly serviced, and MOT’d and supplied with a three-month Autoguard Mechanical Warranty for added peace of mind.
