Presented on Ghia's stand at the Turin Motorshow in 1966, the Maserati Ghibli (type AM115) supersedes the 3500GT. It takes the name of a warm wind of the Sahara desert, an image which sticks to it. Giorgetto Giugiaro who designed the elegant lines himself regarded it as his masterpiece. In 1999, he was elected designer of the century. Icon celebrated even up to the seventh art, the 2 seat coupé by Ghia is immortalised in the movie La Piscine (1969), Alain Delon driving it in Saint-Tropez's countryside. Henry Ford himself, under the spell of its incredible lines, had one sent to his designers' office in Dearborn, to present it as a model of elegance and purity.
Eternal rival to the Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/ 4 it was different by its superior price and comfort. Much less at ease on a circuit, the Maserati Ghibli was intended for large areas and cruising on long straight roads. Propelled by its double overhead 4, 719cc all aluminium V8, the 2 seat coupé promised stunning performances with a top speed of 165 mph (265 km/ h). Developing 310 bhp at 5, 500 rpm, the Ghibli received 4 double barrel Weber carburettors.
The accompanying Maserati Classiche Certificate attests that this example was originally finished in Oro Longchamp with white leather interior trim and is now grey with black. The car was bare-metal resprayed in Switzerland in 2010 and mechanically overhauled in 2011 by Autodeluxe GmbH in Schlieren (Switzerland). Related bills on file total CHF6, 787. Offered from the Keller Brothers' Collection, it has seen infrequent use since acquisition and been kept on static display - as have all the other cars in the collection - for at least seven years. Bonhams' trusted mechanic has started the car and we can attest that the engine runs; however, the car will need some further recommissioning before returning to the road. The Maserati is offered with restoration photographs, a copy of the user's manual, its original jack, and a cancelled Swiss registration document.
