1933 Riley Nine Lynx - extensive restoration to a very high standard
Unveiled at the 1932 Motor Show as the replacement for the Riley Nine ‘Plus Ultra’ four-seater tourer, the Lynx quickly established itself as a favourite among sporting motorists. Many were actively campaigned in rallies and reliability trials, earning the model a strong reputation for performance and durability.
Arguably the most attractive of the touring Riley Nines, the two-door Lynx was produced for the 1933 season only. Its signature feature was the ingenious “disappearing” hood, folding neatly beneath a metal tonneau and giving the car its clean, rakish sporting profile.
This example was laid up for around 60 years before being rescued and subject to an extensive, high-quality restoration by a knowledgeable Riley specialist. The original body was rebuilt and fitted with new aluminium wings, these being of a more sporting style than the originals, taking their cue from the type of wings fitted to Riley’s ‘MPH’ model. The interior was retrimmed to the correct pattern. The engine was comprehensively rebuilt, including the fitment of a ‘Merlin’ crankshaft, alongside much additional work documented in the accompanying history file and photographs.
Returned to the road in 2023, the Lynx has since covered approximately 600 miles. A new hood has also been fitted within the last year. At the 2024 Riley Register AGM, this car was awarded the Cleveland Cup as the “most desirable Riley” present — testament to the quality of the restoration and its enduring appeal. When road tested by myself, the quality of the workmanship was clearly evident, with the car pulling very strongly and feeling totally ‘tight and together’.
The rebuild is fully documented with photographs and history, which will accompany the car.
