The ACMA 400 (an acronym for "Ateliers de Construction de Motocycles et Accessoires") was Piaggio's attempt to enter the world of four-wheeled vehicles, with a vehicle that was the forerunner of the compact utility vehicles of the years to come. The small, twin-cylinder 400cc engine was strictly a two-stroke, powered by a mixture of oil and gasoline. It was a very unusual vehicle, as were the solutions Piaggio engineers found to keep its size to a minimum: to prepare the mixture, a 2. 4-liter oil tank was designed, located under the hood and featuring a graduated scale and a crank. Depending on the amount of gasoline in the tank, the appropriate amount of oil needed to be added by turning the crank.
