Revamped for a second (and final) time in 1998, the R129-series version of Mercedes-Benz’s iconic SL sportscar underwent numerous cosmetic and mechanical changes. Riding on 17-inch alloy wheels as standard, they also sported reprofiled bumpers and smoother taillights. Inside, a new steering wheel design was complemented chrome-ringed instrument dials and more cossetting seats. Powered by Mercedes-Benz’s latest SOHC, three-valves-per cylinder V6 and V8 engines (although, an older V12 remained optional) allied to five-speed automatic transmission, they were typically cleaner, brawnier and more fuel efficient than their predecessors. With some 201bhp / 199lbft on tap from its 2. 8 litre M112 powerplant, the V6-imbued SL280 was reputedly capable of 144mph and 32. 5mpg. Only in production from 1998 – 2001, a mere 1, 704 were sold worldwide.
Finished in the stunning combination of Dark Green / Black Metallic with Helios Soft Nappa leather upholstery, chassis WDB1290592F176127 was completed to order the details below. Notably well-equipped, its specification included: a Panoramic glass hardtop, Black fabric hood, wood / leather steering wheel, wood gear lever / selector gate, headlamp wash / wipe, rear seats, Xenon headlights, heated front seats and folding door mirrors etc. First UK road registered as ‘T58 PAG’ on June 10th 1999, the Mercedes-Benz has had just one former keeper and covered a mere 58, 800 miles from new. Garaged when not in use, it started readily and ran well during our recent photography session. Looking even more stylish ‘in the metal’, the SL280 has self-evidently been pampered and presents far better than the majority of R129-series SLs. Offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, service history / book pack and MOT certificate valid until September 2026.
