A true gentleman’s express, the magnificent Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6. 3 unveiled to great acclaim at the 1968 Geneva Motor Show remains one of the most extraordinary “wolves in sheep’s clothing” ever to prowl the open road. Outwardly near identical to Paul Bracq’s elegant fintail W109 saloon of 1965–72, the 6. 3 hid beneath its refined exterior the mighty, fuel-injected 6. 3-litre V8 borrowed from the legendary 600 limousine.
With 247bhp on tap, this formidable engine propelled the big saloon from 0–62mph in a scarcely believable 6. 5 seconds, storming on to a top speed of 137mph figures that crowned it the fastest production four-door saloon of its day. Air suspension, limited-slip differential, power steering, automatic transmission and four-wheel disc brakes all came as standard, accompanied by the unmistakable Mercedes-Benz cabin craftsmanship of the era.
The example offered here by Autostorico is a particularly charming motorcar. First registered on 17th August 1970, it remains finished in its original Dunkelblau Blue, complemented beautifully by matching blue leather trim. Having spent its entire life in France an impressive 27 years of which were enjoyed in Paris it pleasingly retains its period-correct yellow headlamp lenses.
Purchased in 2017 and held in a private collection, the car passed in early 2025 to a discerning Mercedes-Benz enthusiast, who promptly transported it to the United Kingdom. On arrival it was entrusted to renowned marque specialists NJS Solutions for a comprehensive, no-expense-spared recommissioning. Works included a full overhaul of the air suspension together with a complete mechanical inspection and service, supported by invoices totalling over £9, 000.
Offered with its original handbooks, various invoices and accompanying documentation, this splendid 300 SEL 6. 3 represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of Mercedes-Benz’s most sought-after high-performance saloons in beautifully preserved condition.
