This is the story of a star with the roof down; the E 200 Cabriolet is one of the most elegant and refined cars Mercedes produced in the 1990s, a true jewel of German engineering, today regarded as a high-class youngtimer.
It was launched in 1991 in Seville; it marked an epochal return in the four-seat convertible segment, abandoned twenty years earlier, but it was late, and the reason is clear: Mercedes wanted to build the best cabriolet in the world.
It is a completely new project, built with *** advanced technologies for the era and *** mechanical precision almost maniacal; famous for its legendary robustness and timeless elegance.
Born from seven years of development led by Bruno Sacco, it distilled the experiences gathered by Mercedes in the preceding years; here I must pause to mention Bruno Sacco, whose passion began when he saw a Studebaker cruising the streets of Tarvisio, its lines captivating him.
After studying mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic University of Turin, in 1958 he began his long career at the Daimler-Benz Design Centre, and in 1975 became chief designer, ensuring timeless design for Mercedes-Benz models of the Sacco era.
His Mercedes career lasted over forty years, and in 2007 he was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.
Back to the E 200 Cabriolet, by using high-strength special steels and developing dedicated safety systems, Mercedes built a car that doesn't bend or twist, even with the top down, and is rock solid; its mechanical layout kept Mercedes' typical configuration, with a longitudinal front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive.
Active and passive safety were among its defining aspects; the body was engineered to withstand a series of crash tests that Mercedes had developed as its own standards.
The soft top was retractable, and featured a rear window in glass.
The styling is clean, proportioned and balanced.
With the top up it's a refined coupé; once down, it becomes a timeless art form that still draws admiring looks today.
The 200 Cabriolet was produced in limited numbers between 1993 and 1996, and as such it's one of the rarer examples today, often sacrificed for more powerful variants.
She, *** with its simple but reliable engine, sober elegance and indestructible solidity, remains one of the most balanced cabriolets ever, an elegant convertible for everyday use with a growing collectible value.
It’s perfect for those who love relaxed driving, vintage details and understated elegance.
