1 of only 1, 232 factory cabriolets built
In particular, as an elegant cabriolet there are hardly any comparable vehicles that offer so much at such a high level as the 280 SE 3. 5 litre Cabriolet. First of all, it is a very rare and exclusive, largely hand-built Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet, of which only 1, 232 were built. Then it is a fast and reliable touring car that can still be driven in traffic without issue today. And it is one of the few cabriolets with five seats.
This car we are offering was ordered in 1969 by a Bielefeld entrepreneur at the local Mercedes-Benz dealer Kirstein & Sauer and was registered on 15 April 1970.
As extras from factory included:
46/ 2 Rear fog light 49. 95 DM
51/ 6 Radio Becker Mexico 666. 00 DM
53/ 1 Antenna automatic 249. 75 DM
61/ 6 Fog lights 138. 75 DM
63/ 0 Belted tyres 58. 83 DM
67/ 3 Larger battery 29. 97 DM
Including these extras, the list price stood at a proud 38, 544. 75 DM.
The original factory colour was “hellelfenbein” 670.
After 1. 5 years the first owner sold the car to a well-known Bremen shipping company and shipyard.
In 1979, after eight years in the company’s service, the shipowner took over the car privately and kept it until 1988. Thus the car had one owner from 1971 to 1988 and, due to the change from company to private ownership, two registered holders.
The third owner, a fashion entrepreneur from the Stuttgart area, kept the car for 26 years, until he sold it in 2014 to the predecessor of the current owner.
The service book is well kept and has 17 entries over the decades, 12 of them in Mercedes-Benz authorised workshops.
The car has been registered in Germany throughout and has always been in good hands. Accordingly it is in a very nice original condition, which is also documented by the very good original interior.
Hoods and doors close perfectly and without effort, as one would expect from good, unrestored Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
About 25 years ago the car was repainted in uni black 040 by its third owner, which harmonises very well with the dark red interior.
The car drives exceptionally well. The engine runs very clean and powerful and the automatic transmission shifts flawlessly.
