With over a century under its belt, today’s wiser automotive world is reinventing inspiration by exploring icons of its past. Key elements are selected and transferred into special modern concepts that stand as statements to the manufacturer's heritage and school of automotive creation. Such is the case in Fiat’s select resurrection of 124 Spider which is based on Italy's backbone principle of Carrozzeria-styled barchetta body over a front engine / rear wheel drive arrangement. Using FCA/ Mazda roadster platform, Fiat fitted a FTT-developed turbocharged 4-cylinder engine of variable valve timing in the front to power the rear wheels via a reinforced transmission and firm suspension to revive the 124 experience into a modern barchetta. As per tradition, the body was shaped by Pininfarina and displays numerous original 124 elements first conceived by in-house designer Tom Tjaarda and shared in concurrent creations of his such as DeTomaso’s Pantera and Longchamp. Furthermore, to commemorate the 124’s rallying past, Fiat commissioned Abarth to modify the new 124 as it did back in the early 70s with limited production FIA-homologation special 124CSA. In coordination with FCA Sergio Marchionne’s principle that 'some things belong to a place', each 124 Abarth would be modified in Turin to benefit from an electronically controlled highly tuned engine to a 16% power to weight output ratio, a perfectly balanced center of gravity situated just 38. 5 cm from the ground, an old school mechanical LSD, a stiff suspension of larger antiroll bars and strut tower braces as well as a 4-pot floating caliper braking system. In addition, the 124 Abarth would display aggressive styling with revised front and rear fascias, both engine and trunk lids hand finished in Matte Black (as per 124CSA), a quad exhaust system and 17-inch Gun metal gray alloy wheels. The Abarth emblem decorated body would envelope a specially trimmed interior in Alcantara, microfiber and leather. The overall result would stand as Fiat's statement to its heritage that could not only be visually admired but also experienced via thrilling open top - rear wheel drive school of motoring.
One of the 124 Abarths produced is the one offered that was specially ordered in 2017 in Nero Cinema black exterior over Black leather/ Alcantara interior with red seat inserts, Gun metal wheels and Brembo braking system. Maintained since new as a classic, this venomous black Scorpion is offered fully serviced, in excellent condition with all records, manuals and tools.
