Description
A stunning Mercedes-Benz 250 automatic with a complete history from new, including all original service booklets, maintenance invoices and MOT certificates. Delivered new in Oakland (CA) by Mercedes-Benz dealer Gordon McCampbell to Winfred Heard. This first owner never sold the car, but following his death, the 250 was transferred to his widow’s name. She moved to Hollywood and drove the W114 all those years until it was sold in 1990 to Mr Lecomte from Oakland. In 1998, the Benz was imported into the Netherlands, where the car remained in the possession of a single family for a long time.
The exterior has been repainted in the past in the beautiful original colour ‘Arabergrau 124’, and the work has been done very neatly. And what a superb colour! As you know, this grey shade has become very popular in recent years on many modern cars, and I can see why. Simply stunning, especially in combination with the green-tinted glass. After such a long period, there are naturally some signs of wear; there are a few marks on the front wings. The car has just been professionally polished and the paintwork has a lovely shine. And the doors still close like a safe, just as you’d expect from a Mercedes-Benz back then. Absolute top quality – they don’t make them like this anymore.
The interior is very attractive and in excellent condition. The MB Tex upholstery looks as good as new and may well have been replaced at some point. The original dashboard is undamaged and all the instruments are working as they should. The air conditioning is fitted but not working. The odometer was replaced in 2020 at 85, 609 miles with a kilometre counter showing 71, 345 km. Neatly documented. It’s amazing how beautiful and original the interior is; this car really gives that classic Mercedes feel.
And that’s exactly how this 250 drives: solid, comfortable and effortless. The 6-cylinder engine starts immediately, doesn’t smoke and has plenty of power. A 250 drives much better and is more fun than the standard 200, which makes sense. The automatic gearbox was overhauled just 5, 740 km ago, so it shifts superbly and is beautifully quiet. The differential makes a slight noise, but it can live with that. The / 8 has been excellently maintained; there are invoices available totalling €13, 840 for maintenance and overhauls. Please note: the airconditioning is not working.
The W114/ 115 series was produced for eight years and, despite the high purchase price and hefty surcharges for optional extras, it remained a much-loved German mid-range car for many years. The fact that the Strich-Acht was a success is evident from the fact that almost two million of this model were sold between 1968 and 1976. As every connoisseur knows, this series is the epitome of reliability, from a time when Mercedes-Benz built better cars than the competition. The unstoppable drive for quality and the very best craftsmanship ensured the proverbial German solidity. It was not only popular with successful footballers and artists, but also as a taxi, business car and family car for the well-to-do family man.
