1962 VW Split Screen Camper Van – German Built & Right Hand Drive – Fully Restored. Lovely Example.
We love an early Split Screen bus and are proud to offer this delightful example for sale. Being a 1962 model, this is considered an early bus, which means that it has many desirable features that are sought after amongst collectors and enthusiasts. These include the iconic small rear window and tailgate, small round rear light units, flat wheel arches, ice pick cab door handles and the original full width front bench seat which is very often shamefully replaced for later style seating.
This bus has been the subject of an enormous restoration and has covered little mileage since completion having been kept garaged throughout the interim time. Restoration involved stripping the bus right back and replacing any required panels using brand new components with no expense spared. The bus was then carefully primed and painted in stunning light pastel blue / cream and polished to a lovely finish.
Mechanically, the bus had its old wiring removed and a brand new 12V wiring loom and fuse box installed. Electrical components have also been upgraded wherever necessary. The mechanical system has been overhauled and the gearbox replaced with IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) to allow for superior ride quality and a higher top end speed in 4th gear.
Fully reconditioned 1600 Twin Port engine which starts on the turn of a key and runs effortlessly with all new ancillaries. The bus is also running on a set of rare and original 15 inch steel wheels with brand new polished stainless hubcaps.
The bus features one of our bespoke interiors designed to utilise space effectively whilst also making it feel spacious inside.
The interior features the following:
• Bespoke side facing cabinet with walnut veneered sides and work top. Curved devon edging trim to give a period feel inside.
• Cabinet housing CAN SRL double gas burner / sink combo unit with cold water tap. Small cupboard below to house freshwater container / gas plumbing.
• Waeco CRX50 fridge unit with MPS35 adapter allowing dual operation 12v leisure power and automatic inversion to 240v when connecting to mains. (By far the very best fridge on the market).
• 240v mains hookup system, 12v leisure battery, split charge relay kit, internal 12v phone chargers and power sockets.
• Full width Rusty Lee Rock n Roll bed. (Again, the best bed on the market. We know as we have tried and tested them all and selected the best combination of products over the years). This acts as a 3 person forward facing seat and folds down to make a large comfortable double bed.
• Wolfsburg Crest adjustable seat belt harnesses throughout in grey / chrome buckle. 3-points on front and rear sides and 2-point lap belts in centre front and rear. (6 in total).
• Matching table with walnut veneered top and bottom on a pedestal style setup so it can be easily put up and taken down when not in use.
• Bed custom designed with twin welded uprights to house the table behind it when not in use.
• Matching Rusty Lee double flip down buddy seat with hook on attachment. Creating two additional seats so that you can sit opposite the table.
• Upholstery throughout in stunning mystic grey vinyl with fluting and piping to match.
• Curved bed skirting board in matching walnut veneer to sit neatly flush with the bed frame. Recess incorporated for table leg storage.
• High quality sound insulation pack underneath bed frame that not only helps reduce noise but to retain heat and reduce condensation inside.
• Cabinet and skirting board built with custom raised plinth sections to house curved sidewinder ambient LED lighting. Complete with remote and millions of different colour combinations. This isn’t just for effect (although it does look spectacular), it is only useful functional lighting
• Full curtain set throughout on rails including overlapping front and black out lined for full privacy.
Polished stainless 3 bow roof rack
Retrosounds radio and discreet under dash speaker fitted up front. An expensive extra that looks like a period 1960s radio but features Bluetooth connectivity and DAB radio.
