Introduced at the New York World's Fair on April 17th, 1964, the Ford Mustang was primarily aimed at the post-war 'baby boomer' generation. Backed by an enormous publicity campaign that included television coverage beamed to over 30 million homes and some 2, 500 newspaper advertisements, it proved an instant hit. Originally predicted to sell 100, 000 vehicles annually, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Ford Model A—over 400, 000 units were sold in its first year and 1, 000, 000 had been sold within two years of its launch. Soon available in Coupe, Convertible, and Fastback guise, it came with a range of straight-six and V8 engines together with a beguiling array of factory options.
Previously something of a one horse race, the Pony car market was to explode in 1967. Faced with opposition from the new Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird and revamped Plymouth Barracuda, Ford had little choice but to redesign its iconic entrant. Boasting a wider track and notably more secure handling, the 1967-model year Mustang also featured improved seating and clearer instrumentation. Visually distinguished by its larger front grille, deeper side scallops and concave taillights, it could be specified with anything from a 200ci (120hp) straight-six to a 390ci (315hp) 'big block' V8. Updated the following season with federally mandated side marker lights and a revised grille, the 1968-model year was also notable in Mustang terms for the introduction of the 302ci Windsor 'small block' V8. A highly versatile unit that would remain in production until 2001, it was quoted as developing 220bhp and 300lbft of torque even when fed with the base 'two barrel' carburettor. Thus, while not as potent as the Highland Green 390ci Fastback that Lt. Frank Bullitt (a. k. a. Steve McQueen) thrashed round the streets of San Francisco, a Mustang with a 302ci was still a fast car. Already an icon in standard guise, modified performance versions have become legendary, with those produced by Shelby in the 1960s being particularly prized by collectors today.
Imported to the UK in 2005 prior to a comprehensive restoration completed in 2007, this extremely handsome and purposeful-looking 302 Fastback is described by the vendor as being in exceptional mechanical condition with very good bodywork. Mechanically overhauled in 2025 with only approximately 300 miles covered since, it was acquired by the vendor last year since when he has spent circa £15, 000 on parts to comprehensively refurbish the mechanical components and underside of the car. Works include; welding in of new floor pans, floor sealing throughout with sound deadening added, new carpets, brand-new hand-welded stainless steel exhaust, complete ice blasting and resealing of the underside, new fuel tank and fuel line, brand-new Holly carburettor, new steering wheel and boss, horn and interior mirror, new Mustang logo mats, new shock absorbers, the addition of a Power Brake servo, new oil pressure and temperature sender unit, new battery tray and clamps, new exhaust headers, new starter motor, new distributor and coil, new stainless sill plates, new HT leads, new engine mounts, new dipsticks and vacuum modulator, new bolts, belts, gaskets and oils etc. The interior is reported to be in fine condition and benefits from a polished wood rim steering wheel and fold down rear seat.
Finished in a stunning shade of blue with white stripes and black interior and riding on Remington XT-120 radial tyres on gleaming alloys, this is an opportunity not to be missed. Offered for sale with a history file, photograph album of the restoration and Swansea V5C.
