Baron Wolfgang ‘Taffy’ von Trips, during his first appearance in the Mille Miglia in 1956, drove the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL bearing race number 445. The sculpture depicts him in the thick of the race, in motion.
The piece was first modelled in clay, then cast using the lost-wax technique. Its silvery appearance is the result of meticulous metal polishing and the application of a layer of tin using a flame; the other colours are achieved using acids and coloured waxes.
