Description
Introducing a charming addition to our inventory at Hardy Classics: a lovely 1971 MG Midget 1275. This car is an ideal entry point for anyone looking to step into the world of classic car ownership, offering a much more spirited and capable driving experience than many of its contemporaries.
History & Provenance
This Midget comes with a wonderful local history. It was in long-term ownership for approximately 20 years by a mature couple, with the car being registered in the lady's name. Prior to their two decades of stewardship, it was reportedly owned by a doctor. This consistent, long-term care is evident in the car's honest condition
Bodywork & Structure
Structurally, this MG is "solid as a rock." While it has had some proper welding repairs over its long life to keep it roadworthy, it remains very sound underneath. The red paintwork presents well with a good gloss, though it carries a few honest "battle scars" from its years on the road, including some minor chips and a scratch on the boot lid. For those looking for a show-stopper, a machine polish would work wonders, but as it sits, it is a very presentable and usable classic. It sits on classic steel wheels, which provide a more authentic look than the common wire wheel conversions.
Mechanicals & Performance
Under the bonnet, the engine bay is impressively clean and well-maintained. The 1275cc engine is a fantastic unit—strong, easy to maintain, and capable of keeping up with modern traffic. It shows great oil pressure, holding steady at around 60 lb, and doesn't smoke or use excess fluids. A new speedometer was fitted in 2001 when the car was on about 91, 815 miles, and the car has covered roughly 13, 011 miles since that time.
Interior & Features
The interior is in great shape with comfortable seats and good carpets. It features an aftermarket smaller-diameter steering wheel, which not only suits the car's character but also makes getting in and out much easier. The car includes headrests, a spare wheel in the solid boot, and a hood that is in good condition with no rips or tears.
Summary
This is a "Great Runner" that is ready to be enjoyed immediately. It’s an honest, solid, and mechanically sound classic that isn't so precious you'd be afraid to drive it. With an MOT valid until May 2026, it is ready for many miles of open-top motoring.
