Description
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the BRDC Classic 2026 - Collectors' Cars on Saturday the 25th of July, The Wing, Silverstone Circuit, NN12 8TN. The Volkswagen Type 2 De Luxe Microbus is one of the most recognisable vehicles of the post-war era, its distinctive split-screen design becoming synonymous with versatility and character. Developed using the proven running gear of the Beetle, the Type 2 quickly evolved into a wide range of commercial and passenger variants, with early ‘Splittie’ models now regarded as the most desirable.
This particular example is a rare 21-window De Luxe Microbus, supplied new in right-hand drive form for the UK market. Built on 15 December 1964, it left the factory shortly thereafter for delivery to Ramsgate, specified in Seeblau with a contrasting Blauweiß roof, a colour combination it retains today. Ordered with the M543 option, the vehicle was delivered without rear seats to enable conversion by Devon into one of its highly regarded ‘Caravette’ motorhomes.
The Devon conversion provides a practical and well-considered interior, including a two-hob gas cooker, fridge with water supply, heating, and flexible seating that converts into a double bed. Additional features include storage compartments, a rear wardrobe, interior lighting and full curtains, creating a characterful and usable living space in keeping with the period.
Prior to current ownership, the vehicle was subject to a comprehensive restoration, during which original Volkswagen materials were used for the roof lining, upholstery and door cards. The engine has also been overhauled, and the overall presentation reflects the quality of the work carried out. An accompanying Classic Data report rates the vehicle as ‘Condition 1’, supporting its condition and restoration standard.
Purchased by our vendor in December 2015, the Microbus has since formed part of an exceptional private Collection and has been maintained by the Collection’s in-house mechanic. During this time, it has been used sparingly and presented at selected events, including an invitation to the Classic Motor Show at the NEC in 2019, where it won the Lancaster Insurance Pride of Ownership Concours.
The vehicle is supplied with a comprehensive history file, including a Volkswagen Zertifikat confirming its build details, restoration invoices, a photographic record of the restoration, the Classic Data report and German registration documentation. It has also featured on the ‘Classic Ride’ programme broadcast by Motorvision.
Presented in excellent condition and retaining its desirable Devon conversion and original specification, this 21-window Splittie represents a rare opportunity to acquire a highly collectible and well-documented example of one of Volkswagen’s most iconic models, equally suited to display or continued enjoyment.
