Like BSA, La Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre ('FN' for short) began as a munitions manufacturer, turning to the production of motorcycles around 1900. Today the Belgian company is best known for its sensational four-cylinder models, the first of which appeared in 1904. In 1900 the firm's first powered two-wheeler had been produced by mounting a clip-on engine in a bicycle frame, and in December the following year the first production model arrived, powered by a 133cc single-cylinder engine. FN's single-cylinder models evolved gradually, growing in size firstly to 188cc before arriving at 285cc in 1913, by which time the atmospheric inlet valve had given way to a mechanically operated one. Variable-pulley transmission had been introduced on the belt-driven singles in 1907 but would be superseded by shaft drive in 1910, its introduction coinciding with that of the two-speed gearbox. By 1912 there was a hand-operated clutch and foot operation of the rear brake.
This FN single was acquired by the private vendor from a Mr Wilkinson of Marlow, Wiltshire on 23rd May 1994; its earlier history is unknown. The FN was formerly displayed in The Dundee Museum of Transport and we are advised that it was last restored during the early 1990s.
Frame number '41568' is listed in the VMCC Register of Machines ('Blue Book') where it is recorded as a 1916 machine. However, supplementary records held on file indicate an amended manufacturing date of 1912, with comparable 1912 frame numbers recorded in the '41019' to '41568' range. It should be noted that the accompanying V5C document records the frame number as 'Not Stated' and the engine number as '41568', which appears to be a clerical transposition. Additionally, the date of registration is recorded as 13th November 1916. Offered with old/ new V5C's and two old V5's.
Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/ or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed.
