Origins and Company History
• The Creator: The Xplorer brand was founded by Ray Frank, a visionary in the RV industry who is recognized for building the world's first commercial motorhome in 1958
and whose wife coined the term "motor home".
• Birth of Xplorer: After selling his first company (Frank Industries, which became Travco) in the early 1960s, Ray Frank started Xplorer Motor Homes in 1967.
• The "224" Name: The Xplorer 224 was named for its overall length of 224 inches (approx. 18. 6 feet), making it compact enough to fit in a standard residential garage
while fully equipped inside.
Design and Features
• Chassis: It was primarily built on the durable Dodge Tradesman B300 van platform.
• Body Alterations: Unlike standard camper van conversions, Xplorer modified the Dodge body by cutting away the original roof and back wall. They added extended
fiberglass tops and a dropped-floor section to provide over 6 feet of standing room.
• Layout & Amenities: Despite its footprint, the 224 featured a highly efficient layout including a rear bed/ convertible sofa, a kitchenette (with a 3-way fridge and
2-burner stove), a small bathroom/ wet bath, and ample cabinet storage.
• Mechanicals: Power typically came from a legendary 5. 9-liter (360 cubic-inch) LA-series V8 or a 6. 6-liter (400 cubic-inch) big block engine, paired with the famously
reliable TorqueFlite A727 3-speed automatic transmission.
• Vintage Appeal: The Xplorer 224 remains a highly sought-after collector's item for vintage van enthusiasts. Many owners focus on completely gutting and restoring
these units, converting outdated propane systems to more modern 12-volt, solar, or all-electric setups.
The Dodge we are pleased to offer you here is in exceptionally fine and original condition. The camper was imported to the Netherlands in 2018, after which the owner carried out a thorough restoration. The body was completely repainted, and the undercarriage was fully coated with Tectyl. Subsequently, the mechanical systems were addressed, with many components replaced and upgraded. The radiator was replaced with an aluminum one, and new brakes, shock absorbers, and aluminum rims with new tires were installed, along with a fuel injection system, a larger water tank, an electrically operated waste system, and a new mattress. The camper is still in perfect condition today and is a joy to drive. It guarantees wonderful adventures. Also included in the purchase price are the awning and a small oven, fan, and hand blender that use a US 10-volt outlet.
