The Suzuki Motor Co. was established in 1909 by Michio Suzuki to produce machinery for the cotton industry. After WW2, Japan needed cheap, reliable transport, so Suzuki began producing clip-on engines for pushbikes. By the early 1960s Suzuki was second only to Honda in the number of two-wheelers manufactured. In the 1970s the T and GT models ranged from 125cc twins to 750cc triples and proved to be ‘the last hurrah’ for the Suzuki two-stroke multi-cylinder models. On its launch in 1978, the GT250 X7 was promoted as the ‘Ton-up 250′ due to its claimed 100mph top speed and would have been many motorcyclists’ first bike. Its performance as a learner legal bike actually led to the introduction of new licensing laws restricting learners to 125cc bikes a couple of years later.
This beautifully presented X-7 has been restored by a former Suzuki GB employee, who later ran a classic Suzuki spares business. Originally sold in Sweden, where the bike was supplied with wire wheels, he raided the stores to find as many genuine ‘New Old Stock’ parts as possible to complete the restoration to a very high standard. The engine was treated to new crankcases, heads, barrels, pistons and rings, oil pump and hoses, reed blocks, carbs, air box and rubbers, clutch, some gears, gear selectors and most internal bearings and seals together with a crank overhaul by Grampian Motors. The frame and tinware have been refinished with a new headlamp, fork stanchions, l/ h slider, rear shocks, both mudguards, chainguard, full clock set, master cylinder and hoses, indicators, ignition switch, l/ h switchgear, fuel cap and tap, wiring loom and chain/ sprocket set fitted. This stunning example has completed just over 1100 miles since the restoration and started and ran well whilst being photographed. The X-7 was a top selling model, but surprisingly few have survived and certainly not in this condition. It will be supplied with a list of parts fitted and a current V5C.
