Birmingham Small Arms was established in 1861 to manufacture weapons. Around the turn of the century, they started making bicycles and progressed to motorcycles a few years later. By the 1920s, BSAs were often at the front ranks of competition, and one received a Gold Star award for lapping Brooklands at 100mph in 1937; Gold Star duly became the designation for BSA’s top performance models from 1938 to 1963, which were notably victorious in the Isle of Man Clubmans TTs between 1949 and 1956. The 350cc CB32 variant appeared in 1954 with the new “Big Fin” engine, featuring such improvements as a stronger crankshaft and refined valve gear. Fitted with an Amal GP carburettor, it produced around 30bhp.
This exceptional ‘matching-numbers’ 1959 Gold Star Clubman 350cc retains its original buff log book and has been preserved in its original specification having been in single-family ownership since 1966, though it has been restored to bring it up to its present superb condition. It has always been dry-stored and maintained and, although not used since the death of the present keeper’s grandfather in 2003, it has been kept clean and periodically fired up. There can be few original Clubmans as good as this one, and after some straightforward recommissioning it should be ideal for reliving the glory days of the Ton-Up Boys.
