Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful sports cars ever made, the Jaguar SS100 has been an object of desire for more than eighty years. Due to its rarity and value, the model has inspired numerous imitations. Though few—if any—have been as æsthetically accurate as the cars built by Terry Rowing of TRAC Engineering. By the late 1980s, Rowing had established an enviable reputation for restoring genuine SS100s and learned how to remanufacture components such as the solid brass chromed radiator surround, alloy louvred bonnet and folding windscreen, etc. Deciding to create a Jaguar XJ6-based SS100 evocation that combined the style and feel of the original with more modern road manners, he approached Adrian Newey (a customer at the time, but now the principal and technical director of the Aston Martin Formula One team) for permission to take precise GRP body moulds from Newey’s superb 1938 car. Unveiled in late 1990, the resultant TRAC prototype was well received by the motoring press. The production version was predominantly supplied in ‘home-build’ form at the rate of four a year until 1996, when the manufacturing rights were purchased by Roger Williams of Suffolk Sportscars. Reborn and refined as the Suffolk SS100, the design remained in production until 2020.
This particular car started life as a down-at-heel 1969 Jaguar XJ6, complete with the 4. 2-litre XK engine. It was acquired by the vendor in 2007, and in 2008 the work took place which saw it transformed into the spitting image of one of the greatest sporting automobiles of the 1930s. The work cost more than £56, 000, as all the invoices on file and correspondence with Suffolk Sportscars reveal, and the whole build was meticulously documented, with the vendor keeping detailed notes as it progressed. It was decided that the car should not be constrained by the rather sober pre-war colour palette, hence it positively sparkles in the spectacular shade of Volkswagen Wild Cherry Red, which is handsomely complemented by a Tan leather interior. The finishing touch was the dateless registration number, which was allocated to the car in 2015, so all but the most highly trained eyes would struggle to tell this from a genuine SS100 without lifting the bonnet.
In 2013, the Suffolk was tested on a rolling road by Hi-Tech Motorsport, and despite being used sparingly, it has had a total of twelve services, the most recent performed in April, 2026, at 6, 152 (post completion) miles. Its longest outing has been a tour of Spain with other SS100 owners, and maintenance has included fitment of a reconditioned four-piston brake calliper in 2020, stainless steel exhaust system, and the upgrades of a sports coil and an alternator in 2026, along with a new battery, thermostat, and the radiator water hoses recently changed. Fitted with Blockley tyres for period authenticity, the distributor has been converted to electronic ignition. It has been regularly MOT’d and is offered with a certificate valid until June, 2027, showing no advisories. Starting readily and running well during the recent photoshoot, it is sold with the V5C (on which the car is still registered to the donor vehicle but with the body type as Sports), and many invoices, notes and MOTs.
