Entered from the estate of the late Peter Macey
Buick’s large capacity six-cylinder model, perfect for long distance touring
Ripe for ‘oily rag’ recommissioning and use as is

Introduced in 1925, the Buick Master Six represented the marque’s premium six-cylinder offering, positioned above the Standard Six and aimed at buyers seeking refinement without the cost of the more exclusive Cadillac or Packard models. Sharing its basic GM platform and overhead-valve six-cylinder engine with Oldsmobile, the Master Six nevertheless retained Buick’s distinctive identity through its upmarket styling, quality engineering and excellent reputation for durability.
Available in a wide variety of body styles by Fisher Body, the Master Six featured refined appointments and the benefit of Duco’s modern multi-colour lacquer finishes. In 1927, Buick adopted its elegant Gothic Goddess bonnet mascot.
The model was continuously developed throughout its production, with engine capacity increasing from 255 to 309 cubic inches before Buick adopted its new straight-eight engines for 1931. The Master Six also enjoyed international success, and agreements were made to assemble it in Japan from knock-down kits and export it to markets around the world. Its reputation for reliability was famously demonstrated when Buick organised a dealer-supported round-the-world drive to showcase the car’s endurance.
We have a certain penchant for jaunty 1950s and ’60s vintage car restorations, and this 1927 Buick Master Six is among the loveliest—we especially like the bright orange brake drums and inner wings! It was supplied new to Australia but was shipped to Virginia in 1965 by Henry Cheatham, a Lynchburg Region AACA member, who coincidentally also owned and restored the Australian-bodied Essex Phaeton which Peter Macey bought in 1976. Surviving papers suggest that Mr. Cheatham fielded the Buick in several events, including the Horseless Carriage Club of America North Carolina Region’s Sixteenth Annual Tour in 1967, the Danville Tobacco Association’s Centennial Anniversary Festival Antique Car Show & Parade in 1969, and the Historic Fredericksburg Region 12th Annual Meet at Culpeper (undated). It remained in use in Virginia up to 1977.
For twenty-three years, the Buick’s history goes blank, but by 2000 it had joined the Macey Collection and was registered with the DVLA. However, Mr. Macey only ran it on the road for one year before placing it in storage, so it will require recommissioning and then, perhaps, some ‘oily rag’ preservation. It is supplied with the V5C, a V5, the 2000 MOT certificate, and Virginia Inspection Certificates and events paperwork from 1965-74.
