The otherworldly Citroën DS has enjoyed countless accolades since it first saw the light of day in 1955. Classic & Sports Car named it the most beautiful car of all time following a poll of twenty of the world’s most influential car designers, including Giugaro, Bracq and Fioravanti. It also came third in the Car of the Century competition of 1999. The futuristic design of its Flaminio Bertoni-penned body was a stunning sight in the austere world of the ’50s, and remains so even today. The self-levelling hydropneumatic suspension was also way ahead of its time, delivering a ‘magic carpet’ ride that many manufacturers would be grateful for even now. It also endowed the car with good enough handling to win the Monte Carlo Rally in both 1959 and 1966, despite its relative lack of power.
Citroën sold 1, 455, 000 DSs, but survivors seldom come with as much history as this excellent specimen, desirably equipped with the five-speed manual gearbox. It is had only five registered keepers from new, and its ownership history can be traced all the way back to the second owner. It was purchased by its fourth owner, a gentleman from Halifax in the West Riding of Yorkshire, in 1998, and it entered the present ownership in 2003, that of a known Citroën specialist. The MOT history is traceable back to 1994, when the odometer reading stood at 40, 571 miles. The Citroën’s mileage has slowly increased during the vendor’s ownership, to over 56, 750 miles, and that appears to be the original mileage from new.
The DS was subject to an extensive bodywork restoration in 2010, which included a full repaint and the application of Waxoyl to all the cavities. Further work has included the refurbishment of the headlining and the fitment of a new rear blind, and at some stage the steering rack has been replaced. Some time has been spent tidying the engine bay up to its correct appearance around covid time, including with new cowl covers. The interior appears pleasingly original, with a light patina, though a retro-styled radio has been installed and is appropriately in keeping. The car’s other notable features include Michelin tyres, 123 electronic ignition, and stainless steel sill covers. It is supplied with paperwork including the V5C, period sales literature, and a large collection of MOTs. Notably, it has just been issued with a fresh MOT with no advisories, which remains valid until July, 2027.
