1984 HOMARK CRITERION (FLUER DE LYS) VANIt is not often that an exceptionally rare 1984 Homark Criterion (Fleur de Lys type) Van comes to market, and rarer still to find an example presented in such well-maintained, usable, and thoughtfully improved condition. Closely related to the Fleur de Lys van, with which it shares its distinctive and highly evocative coachbuilt body, the Homark Criterion differs significantly in its mechanical underpinnings. Whereas the Fleur de Lys typically utilised Ford Transit running gear and was produced in Nottinghamshire in modest numbers—thought to be between 200 and 300 examples—the Homark Criterion was constructed in Poole, Dorset, based upon Leyland Sherpa / Leyland DAF 200 mechanicals. Production is believed to have been extremely limited, with only around 60 examples manufactured between 1983 and 1984, making surviving vehicles exceptionally scarce today. Registered in August 1984, this particular example has survived its 42 years remarkably well and presents as a highly characterful and practical classic. Over the years, it has benefitted from a number of sensible upgrades and refurbishment works carried out by previous owners. Most notably, the original petrol Sherpa engine has been replaced with a more reliable and economical Peugeot XUD9 non-turbo diesel unit, greatly enhancing usability for modern driving conditions. To complement this conversion, a GPS speedometer has been fitted, while the original speedometer remains in place. Mechanically, the vehicle is reported to run and drive well, with no oil or water leaks evident, and with a heater that functions effectively. Further recent improvements include the installation of a new electronic lift pump, along with renewed fuel lines and filter. The aluminium coachbuilt body is presented in very good condition overall, with only minor marks commensurate with age and use. Importantly, the aluminium construction removes the typical concerns associated with corrosion in steel-bodied vehicles. The brightwork is said to respond well to polishing, offering scope for further cosmetic enhancement. Inside, the vehicle has benefitted from rewiring of the internal electrics, along with the fitment of new indicator and washer stalks. While we are informed that a small number of minor finishing tasks remain—principally relating to interior trim—these are relatively straightforward and have been sensibly reflected in the guide price. With fully restored examples of these highly unusual vans now often commanding figures in excess of £25, 000, this Homark Criterion represents an excellent opportunity for the next custodian to take a rare and eye-catching vehicle to the next level. Whether deployed as a distinctive promotional tool, a practical commercial vehicle, or simply enjoyed as a unique classic, it offers tremendous versatility and undeniable presence.
