Citroën HY Ambulance, Netherlands Red Cross: time capsule on wheels
Some cars tell a story. This Citroën HY tells one that you don't often come across anymore: that of an original Dutch-delivered ambulance, built and deployed for the Dutch Red Cross, which served faithfully its entire life, and in a way that you can still see and feel.
An icon with a mission
For decades, the Citroën HY has been one of the most recognizable commercial vehicles in European automotive history. With its distinctive corrugated bodywork, angular lines, and practical, front-wheel-drive construction, the HY became the vehicle of choice for those who combined functionality with character. In its ambulance version, this robust van took on an even more meaningful role: transporting people when it really mattered.
This specific HY fulfilled its duty as an ambulance for many years and was subsequently lovingly housed in a museum dedicated to ambulance vehicles, a museum that has unfortunately since closed its doors. It was precisely that period in the museum that proved to be a blessing for the condition in which this vehicle finds itself today.
Never restored. And that is exactly why it is so special.
In a world where many classics have been restored, repainted, or "improved," this Citroën HY remains completely original. No restoration, no modifications to hide anything, just a car that has stood the test of time thanks to consistently good maintenance.
The bodywork is still completely original and, exceptionally for a HY of this age, entirely rust-free: something you rarely encounter on this model anymore. The interior has a light, honest patina: every spot of wear tells a piece of history, without the car ever having been "refurbished". And then there is that smell. Whoever takes a seat inside smells not new upholstery or fresh paint, but the authentic scent of a car that was already on the road decades ago, a time machine that takes you back to the time when this van was making its rounds. Throughout its entire service life, the car has been excellently maintained all these years, which explains why the base remains so pristine.
Museum piece or daily driving classic
This Citroën HY lends itself to two very different futures. As a museum piece or collector's item, this is a vehicle that deserves its place among the finest examples of Dutch Red Cross heritage: original, pristine, and with a verifiable provenance. But it is at least as conceivable that someone will put this bus back on the road: lovingly maintained as it is, ready to impress once again at every event, every drive, and every encounter along the way.
This is not a car you "fix up". This is a car you keep, and which, exactly as it is now, deserves a second life full of attention and appreciation.
