Description
Trade-in car.
The AMC Pacer is one of those cars people are rarely neutral about. Some think it is brilliant. Others openly wonder what, exactly, was going on in the American Motors design department. Both reactions are understandable.
And that is precisely what makes it so interesting.
The Pacer was introduced in the mid-1970s as a completely different take on the compact car. AMC wanted to build a car that felt spacious inside, while remaining much more compact on the outside than a traditional American sedan. The result was wide, rounded, unmistakable, and fitted with an enormous amount of glass. The nickname “flying fishbowl” did not come out of nowhere.
And yet, the Pacer was far cleverer than its appearance sometimes suggests. The car was designed from the inside out, with passenger space as the starting point. The wide body, large windows, short overhangs, and unusual proportions gave it a character entirely its own. At a time when many American cars were still large, angular, and heavy, the Pacer seemed to come from an entirely different future.
This example dates from 1982 and is equipped with the 4. 2-liter six-cylinder engine. The car has had one private owner. For the first five years, it belonged to the company, after which the same owner continued to use the Pacer privately. The odometer shows 82, 000 kilometers, a modest figure that is convincingly documented.
The Mocha Brown Metallic paint suits the character of the car particularly well. Warm, thoroughly period-correct, and just unconventional enough. We like it. That is worth saying.
The Pacer was found on one of the most beautiful streets in Venlo, parked behind an elegant townhouse. Somehow, that image fits perfectly. An unusual American hatchback, quietly sitting behind Dutch façades as if it had simply belonged there all along.
The condition is neat, with exactly the charm you want from an original Pacer. An AMC Pacer Hatchback 4. 2 from 1982 in Mocha Brown Metallic, with one private owner, modest documentation, and a demonstrably low mileage. A car that will continue to divide opinion. Fortunately, that does not have to be a problem at all.
