When Mercedes-Benz introduced the R107-generation SL in 1971, it had a considerable legacy to uphold. Its predecessors, the legendary 300SL Gullwing and Roadster, had established Mercedes-Benz as a manufacturer capable of producing some of the world's most desirable sports cars, while the subsequent Pagoda SL had brought a greater degree of refinement and accessibility to the marque's two-seat roadster.
The R107 continued this evolution, combining elegant styling with the engineering, comfort and build quality for which Mercedes-Benz had become renowned. Beneath its long bonnet was a range of engines derived from the marque's larger saloon models, while the chassis and running gear were engineered to provide a sophisticated balance between sporting ability and long-distance touring comfort.
Over its remarkably long production run, the R107 was continually developed, receiving improvements to its engines, safety equipment, suspension and interior. By the 1980s, the SL had matured into an exceptionally refined grand tourer, retaining the unmistakable character of the original design while benefiting from more than a decade of development.
This bright and attractive 1987 example, finished in the classic colour scheme of Signal Red with a beige leather interior, has had seven former keepers, with the most recent family acquiring the car in 2018. The odometer records a sensible 93, 400 miles, with only a few thousand miles in recent years. The SL has enjoyed maintenance over the years by a number of leading London-based Mercedes-Benz specialists including Steve Redfearn, Roger Edwards and Colin Ferns. Particularly noteworthy is an invoice for mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment by Roger Edwards in 2014 (c. 88, 000 miles) at a cost of £9, 679. The 300SL is accompanied by its original Mercedes-Benz book pack, together with a number of older MOT certificates, current MOT certificate valid to January 2027. In preparation for the sale the car has been checked over and any minor items attended to (such as a replacement battery, drop links and minor electrical items).
With its elegant proportions, understated presence and proven mechanical package, these later models offer genuine usability alongside an enduring collectors status. In our opinion, well worth a closer look.
