By the mid-2000s, Audi's S models had established a formidable reputation for combining understated styling and sublime performance. The B7-generation S4, introduced in 2004, represented a high point of this philosophy, bringing together sophisticated quattro engineering with a magnificent naturally aspirated 4. 2L V8. Available in Saloon, Cabriolet and Avant forms, the latter offered an especially compelling proposition: sports-car performance wrapped in the practicality of a beautifully engineered five-door estate.
At its heart was Audi's 4. 2-litre, 40-valve V8, displacing 4, 163cc and producing 344bhp, with a thumping 410Nm of torque. Featuring twin overhead camshafts, variable intake technology and a distinctive high-revving character, it delivered wonderfully linear performance and an evocative V8 soundtrack. In this Tiptronic-equipped example, power is channelled through a six-speed automatic transmission to Audi's renowned quattro permanent four-wheel-drive system. Performance was impressive by any contemporary standard, with 0–62mph in 5. 9 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph. A remarkably accomplished combination of performance, refinement and everyday practicality.
This particular example was first registered in January 2008 and is finished in the particularly attractive combination of Moro Blue Pearl metallic with a contrasting cream Recaro leather interior, which remains in very nice condition. The car is presented in very good, largely original condition, with just one tasteful modification: a Milltek sports exhaust system, enhancing the characterful V8 soundtrack with a pleasingly deep, throaty burble without becoming intrusive.
Now showing 76, 337 recorded miles, the Audi is accompanied by a good service history, including its stamped service book, recording predominantly main dealer maintenance from its original registration through to October 2024 at 74, 859 miles. The original document wallet, handbooks and two keys are also present, together with further documentation evidencing attentive maintenance throughout its life.
Increasingly appreciated for its sonorous naturally aspirated V8, understated ‘sleeper’ styling and remarkable breadth of ability, the B7 S4 Avant represents a great chapter in Audi's performance-car history. A wonderfully usable contemporary classic, offering a compelling blend of performance and everyday practicality.
