For sale is my 1988 Volvo 240 GLT Automatic. The rarest, highest specification and most sought after in the 240 line-up.

Mileage: 165, 000 on the clock (estimated 169k due to a broken odometer before I purchased it)

History:
This 240 GLT was registered on 14th October 1988 and has spent its entire life in the London area with only 4 former keepers. I purchased it at the end of April from a chap in London who had owned it since 2014. The mileage shows 165, 000 on the clocks but the MOT history shows the odometer broke in 2015 and the previous owner didn’t know how to fix it. He only used it once a week though and the mileage is estimated to be about 169, 000 in reality. I have since fixed the odometer and it works perfectly now.
Exterior:
The GLT was different from other 240’s in that it was marketed as the top spec "sports" version of the 240. It had the factory black trims above the headlight, black grill and black side trims along the body. These are all present and correct for that sporty look. The car wears its 189 Polar White paintwork very well and having benefited from a recent machine polish it really shines. There is the odd scuff and mark shown which has been photographed. The rear wheelarches are not bad as shown in the photos. The lip below the tailgate is good. The lower lip of the tailgate itself is really good and the tailgate rubber is seated perfectly. There is a sunroof fitted which is aftermarket and although it doesn’t seem to work, it doesn’t leak either. All the windows and the sunroof are etched with the reg number for extra security. All the lower trims and bumpers have been painted black in the past which looks rubbish but its is flaking off. A Brand new windscreen was fitted last week with the later rubber that seals better because it doesn’t leak with age, gives less wind noise and looks cleaner. Tow bar fitted and working. A pair of new pressed steel road legal numberplates enhance the look of the car.
Wheels & Tyres:
The car sits on its original 15” Virgo alloy wheels which were unique to the GLT in the UK market. There is a full set of 5 including the spare and all 4 centre caps are fitted which is rare. The wheels themselves have curbing and brake dust staining which is expected for 27 year old wheels but any decent wheel refurbisher would be able to sort that. 195/ 60/ 15 tyres all round with plenty of tread.
Interior:
The interior is a sea of black button back leather to remind you that you’re not just in a 240, you’re in a GLT. The interior is well presented and a super comfy place to be with central locking, electric windows all round, electric mirrors and heated front seats. The leather isn’t perfect but good for its age. A couple of the buttons have pushed through the leather and the driver’s seat stitching has come apart on the bolster. This could be repaired quite easily by any upholsterer as it hasn’t torn the leather. All the interior plastics are complete and present with a pair of un-smashed door pockets. They do have some cracks but they aren’t smashed to bits as most commonly are and are perfectly usable. As every 240 owner knows, the heater is like a furnace on a cold morning. Also fitted is a factory 7 seat conversion in the boot for the kids. All the dash clocks function perfectly including the odometer which has just had gears fitted. Audio is taken care of by a full Pioneer sound system which was fitted in 2001 at great cost. This includes front and rear door speakers, A pillar tweeters, Pioneer headunit with cassette and radio plus a 6 disc auto-changer which is hidden away inside the glovebox. The original Volvo floor trays are all present.
Suspension & Brakes:
Being a GLT this 240 sits 15mm lower than the lower spec models and benefits from other factory performance upgrades such as heavy duty front shock absorbers with thicker anti roll bars front and rear. This makes the car firmer and sportier to drive whilst still maintaining that signature floating on a cloud waft of a 240. The suspension is in good order with no knocks or bangs and the brakes have more than enough force to throw you through the windscreen if needed.
Engine & Drivetrain:
The original B230E on K-jet injection runs really well and pulls smoothly, coupled with the AW71 automatic gearbox it creates a really nice and comfortable ride but still enough urgency to get the power down when you need it thanks to the factory fitted performance “V” camshaft that came in the GLT and increased the power over the lower spec 2. 3 models in the range. As stated above the mileage is estimated to be about 169k on the car but the dash clocks show 165k. Both engine and box drive smoothly and the gearbox shifts gears nicely. The car has just had a brand new battery as well as a full service of oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, plug leads and a new thermostat to ensure its running tip top. The cambelt was changed in 2014 and there is a receipt to prove this so it is good for another few years yet. The engine and gearbox on the 240 are completely reliable, proven by the fact that I drove it 250 miles home from London on the day I bought it and have used it daily ever since without issue.
There is also a Cobra alarm with remote central locking fitted which I was told by the previous owner it was fully functioning but I have not tried this.
Included is two sets of keys and two remote fobs for the alarm. Full handbook and wallet, handbook for the Pioneer audio plus various pieces of service history dating back to 2013 with the odd receipt beforehand.
