A concept successfully revived in recent years, the Multipla 'people carrier' first appeared in 1956. Based on the 600 saloon, FIAT's first rear-engined car, the uniquely versatile Multipla featured a 'forward control' layout, maximising interior space. Forward control enabled three rows of seats to be installed in the six-seater version which, with the rearmost two rows folded flat, provided a van-like load-carrying platform. With just 22bhp available from the 633cc four-cylinder engine, performance was necessarily modest, the Multipla's top speed being around 88km/ h (55mph); it was, however, notably frugal. Taxi and 4/ 5-seater versions were available also.
Performance was considerably improved with the arrival of the 767cc 600D version in 1960. Maximum power went up to 29bhp, which permitted a higher final drive ratio to be used; top speed increased and there was a slight improvement in fuel consumption. Today these charming and highly practical little vehicles are among the most sought after of all post-war FIATs.
Beautifully finished in two-tone dark grey/ ivory with white/ red vinyl interior, this charming Multipla has the most desirable six-seater version, a model that has attracted a cult following. The FIAT has been in the ownership of one family for more than 30 years in the province of Cosenza in Calabria, Southern Italy. Offered with an old-style Italian libretto, it was comprehensively restored in 2017 and is described by the vendor as in generally excellent condition, with mechanicals in good working order.

Porteuse d'un concept réapparu avec succès depuis une trentaine d'années, la familiale Multipla sortit en 1956. Sur la base d'une berline 600, premier type de Fiat à moteur arrière, la Multipla polyvalente par excellence offrait un poste de conduite avancé qui maximisait l'espace intérieur. Cette voiture à « cabine avancée » permettait l'installation de trois rangées de sièges en version six places dont les sièges arrière rabattables dégageaient un espace de chargement comme dans un break. Avec 22 ch seulement disponibles du moteur à quatre cylindres de 633 cm3, les performances étaient forcément modestes avec une vitesse de pointe d'enviton 88 km/ h, mais avec un appétit plutôt frugal. Il en existait aussi des versions taxi et à 4/ 5 places.
Les performances furent nettement améliorées avec l'introduction de la version 600 D de 767 cm3 en 1960. La puissance bondit à 29 ch permettant ainsi de monter un rapport final plus long. La vitesse maximale augmenta et la consommation baissa légèrement. De nos jours, ces charmants et très pratiques petits véhicules font partie des Fiat d'après 1945 les plus recherchées.
Superbement peinte en deux tons, gris foncé et ivoire avec un intérieur rouge et blanc en vinyle cette charmante Multipla est une très désirable version six places, un modèle qui a ses fanatiques. Cette Fiat a été dans la même famille depuis plus de 30 ans dans la province de Cosenza en Calabre. Offerte avec son ancien libretto italien, elle a été profondément restaurée en 2017 et le vendeur la décrit comme étant en excellent état général et dotée d'une mécanique en bon état de fonctionnement.
