The car was imported (from the US) in 2016 and is now taxed and MOT’d with correct UK registration documents.
This car is a rare ‘half federalised’ car. A small quantity of 54s were exported to the US with the slightly larger US spec Renault engine but without the other less desirable modifications that the US government demanded for the fully federal S2 (type 65)
Being a ’69 car (although registered in the US in ’70) it carries the fairly rare black Lotus nose badge that some claim was fitted as a tribute to the death of Lotus driver, Jim Clark.
I had originally bought this Europa to build into a track-oriented car, but have since had a change of plans, having now bought an S1 racer.
I would describe this as a driveable rolling restoration. It is fully road legal. I had to get an MOT to obtain the UK registration. The V5 came through with no issues and is now on a correct, age related ‘H’ plate.
I have fitted a new clutch, stainless exhaust system and uprated (and expensive) rose-jointed gear lever pivot. I have also fitted the correct UK spec brand new front and rear lights (all from Banks Europa). It has a new battery and has had its starter motor refurbished.
I had an experienced classic car auto electrician go through the car thoroughly and get everything working properly (including the electric windows).
The car drives well with a nice and positive gear change. The paintwork is slightly unusual in that it’s metallic, but has a slightly textured finish. I actually quite like it but I would expect the new owner would probably want to eventually repaint it, possibly to it’s original factory colour of British racing green. The engine is the original and runs well.
The seats have at some point been re upholstered in a cloth material. Although not offensive, isn’t the original black vinyl. The dash is pretty much in full working order (apart from the speedo) but cosmetically could use some tidying up. The doors do the usual Europa ‘drop’ when opened. I’ve actually seen much worse (my S1 for starters).
I’m planning on driving the car up to the Lotus day at Castle Combe at the end of May so could be viewed there if required.
