A482 HPJ RANGE ROVER 1983 IN VOGUE LIMITED EDITION

A beautiful example of one of the rarest Range Rover Limited Edition Models- a 1983 Range Rover "In Vogue" 4 door. The following details about this rare Range Rover:

The third Limited edition to bear the "In Vogue" name was announced to the public on 25th August 1983. Promotional activities included an eight page advertisement feature in the September 1983 issue of Vogue magazine, where the vehicle was linked to the DAKS autumn fashion collection and to one of the collections stockists, Simpsons of Piccadilly.

There were just 325 examples of the 1983 In Vogue, all four door models painted in Derwent Blue metallic and carrying grey coachlines with a broad band above a narrower band of the same colour. Some had the new five speed manual gearbox, and a small number were built with air conditioning. They had enamelled three-spoke alloy wheels with unpainted rims and centre caps with white relief lettering.

Interior features were polished walnut door cappings with lighter wood inlays, adjustable front and rear armrests, rear head restraints, rear seatbelts and a digital Clarion radio cassette with four speakers. The tailgate capping was black. the carpet in the load area extended to the lower section of the rear seat back and the load area also contained a picnic hamper (the same as that supplied with the 1981 in Vogue 2 door.

A482 HPJ was first registered on the 6th Ocotber 983, and was one of the few built with both the LT77 5 speed "long stick" manual gearbox and air conditioning. The cars first owner kept it for nearly two years, before it was sold on 20th June 1985 to Mr Jack Temple of Pyford Surrey by Trident Garages, then Land Rover dealers in Ottershaw, Surrey. Copies of the original sales invoice and finance paperwork are on file, showing that Mr Temple paid £13, 250 for the two year old car, and that he was allowed a trade in value of £1, 000 against his Tuscan Blue 1971 Suffix A Range Rover 2 door as a part exchange.

Mr Temple kept the car was a total of 13 years, selling it in February 1998 to a Mr Michael Dancey of Guildford, Surrey, for the sum of £1, 750 (copy of receipt on file). Mr Dancey owned the car for a further 13 years, using it sparingly but continuously until the car was bequeathed to a neighbour, Mr George Smith, when Mr Dancey passed away in December 2010. Just over a year later, in February 2012, Mr Smith passed the car to Melvin Howard of Godalming, a family friend of Mr Darcey and a Land Rover specialist. The car joined Mr Howards collection of rare and early Range Rovers.

Recently the car has undertaken a cosmetic restoration, including a full professional re spray in Derwent Blue, a thorough cleaning and refinishing of the chassis and underside (which was in remarkably solid condition, with evidence of just a few neat repairs to the rearmost outer sills and front foot wells), and refurbishing the original alloy wheels.

The car has also had the walnut door cappings professionally re-lacquered, and the headlining recovered in the correct Palomino brushed nylon material. The upper tailgate was suffering from some corrosion, so a aluminium replacement from Famous Four, built using the original Triplex glass was fitted so the security etching and heated rear window elements are correct for the car and year. The car is still equipped with the original In Vogue Hamper and securing straps (most of these were lost when cars were sold second hand, so they are now extremely rare and highly sort after).

Mechanically the car was in fine detail when I brought it. The car has had replacement break discs and pads all round, fitter a new electric fuel pump, clutch master and slave cylinders, and the front half of the exhaust system. The car has had a full service and running well.

There is a copy of a receipt on file for a replacement clutch and gearbox from Banbury Gearboxes in December 1996 at approximately 60, 000 miles. The gear change is precise and the transfer box and diff locks work as they should.

The MOT history is extensive and shows that the car has been used sparingly yet consistently over the last 30+ years. There are 23 old MOT certificates in the history file, from 1992 until 2017 with a current MOT valid until 31st October 2018.

This is a extremely rare opportunity to own a piece of Land Rover history in excellent yet useable condition. With values of good, original 2 door Range Rovers with provenance having headed north of £40, 000, this stunning car represents excellent value for a very rare, limited edition classic Range Rover. There are probably only a handful of 1983 "In Vogue" 4 doors left in existence, and A482 HPJ is undoubtedly one of the best.

The reason for this sale is due to upgrading car collection. Please also see other vehicles I have for sale.
