This car is part of the Hawk Cars demonstrator fleet that is available for sale to fund the build of the first of the next generation of Hawk Lancia Stratos replicas. The build of this car was completed in 2018 and the car is correctly registered having passed through the IVA system.
Finished in the famous Alitalia livery the body is a Group 4 Round Arch in Safari livery that was applied at Kingswell Coachworks. The finish is spectacular. Being a Safari car it is fitted with the extra spare wheel mounted on a removable roof mounted rack. This can be removed if it's not to your taste. You'll notice that the roof panel underneath the spare wheel does not have the Alitalia striping that you'd see on other versions, the reason being that Lancia Corse took a leaf out of the Mini Cooper book and left it white to reflect heat. Again, if the buyer prefers the stripes these are easily added. The "kangaroo bars" seen on the original Safari cars have not been fitted to this car. The chassis is painted in Verde Chariot (lime green) in tribute to the Works Lancia as this was the original colour that the genuine Safari car wore when it dragged into the limelight (sorry) to become a star on the world stage! We know as some of the work done to restore the original car that was recently for sale on this site was done at our workshops.
The drivetrain for the car is Alfa Romeo's fabulous Busso V6 24v in it's most powerful guise, a 3. 2 litre with a 6 speed gearbox, the donor car being a pre production prototype Alfa Romeo 147GTA that had covered 6000 miles before a destruction order was issue by Alfa Romeo. The Alfa Romeo ECU has been replaced by a bespoke Omex system and fully mapped giving incredible performance. The exhaust is fitted with catalytic converters and is a twin outlet stainless system that will last the life of the car. Engine cooling is provided by a bespoke aluminium radiator with twin electric fans, the coolant pipes run through the spine of the car and are stainless steel.
The cars suspension closely mirrors the original Lancia Stratos. The fabricated rear hub carrier is attached to a McPherson strut with a spherical joint top mount, the shock absorber have an adjustable lower spring pan. The lower reversed A arm is nylon bushed at the outer end and has a rose joint at the inner end and is connected by a nylon bushed and rose jointed leading link to the chassis. There is an adjustable anti roll bar fitted and there are high and low pick up points to set the ride height to your choice. The front suspension comprises an upper A arm with inner nylon bushes and a high angle rose joint connecting it to the extended Fiat stub axle with a lower transverse arm fitted with an inner rose joint inner and an outer Fiat ball joint. All identical to the original Stratos. There is a leading link with a rose jointed clevis. There is a set of adjustable shock absorbers, choice of mounting positions for ride height and an adjustable front anti roll bar. The lack of rubber anywhere in the suspension means that geometry can be set and adjusted at will to give excellent handling and road manners. The chassis has been tested for strength and has a 6000 ft lbs per degree torsional rigidity. The upshot of this is that suspension movements do not twist the chassis which allows the fitment of stiffer springs that couldn't be fitted to the original car as this caused chassis flex resulting in cracked windscreens.
The car sits on a set of replica Campagnolo "Coffin Spoke" wheels with 8* 15 front wheels and 12* 15 rears wrapped in Michelin TB15 tyres for the ultimate grip.
The boot is untrimmed currently but could be carpeted at the buyers cost by negotiation.
The interior features a Group 4 style dashboard and is left hand drive. There is a replica Lancia Stratos Stradale steering wheel and black Stradale seats that are very comfortable. The iconic helmet door bins are absent as the door bars fitted to the car preclude this feature however, as the door bars are removable, it is possible to fit these and a pair will be included with the car when sold.
The car has been used as a show vehicle with the occasional road demonstration run or magazine feature. The mileage covered is minimal and the car is currently out of MOT test but a new certificate will be provided for the new owner.
Serious enquiries only please. The new owner of this vehicle will be someone who doesn't mind being the centre of attention wherever they go. And you can go far in it, fitted with twin tanks it has a reasonable range dependant on how you treat the loud pedal. It's also surprisingly practical for a rally car. Nobody will believe you when you tell them you can fit a set of golf clubs in the car or have enough room for luggage for two people for a week or two of touring. You might have to take the clubs out of their bag and squeezing the trolley into the boot might be tight but it is a party trick that has to be seen!
