Presented at the 1948 London Motor Show, it was initially used as a showcase for the new XK engine, designed by William Heynes. The first 242 cars were built with a wooden structure and aluminium body, before a switch to steel in 1950. Its name refers to its top speed of 120 mph (190 km/ h), making it the fastest production car in the world at the time. During a test drive in Belgium in 1949, a prototype even reached 217 km/ h. The model was available in three versions: roadster (OTS), coupé (FHC) and cabriolet (DHC). Its 3. 4-litre six-cylinder engine with twin camshafts produced 160 bhp, with a four-speed manual gearbox. The XK120 excelled in racing and endurance events, topping 100mph over 24 hours at Montlhéry, and one of the first cars was delivered to actor Clark Gable. Today, the XK120 is an icon of the 50's. - Europe's leading car concierge, Carsup assists its customers with the purchase, care and sale of their vehicles, from classic cars to modern supercars.
