Presented at the 1948 London Motor Show, it was initially used as a showcase for the new XK engine, designed by William Heynes. The first 242 cars were built with a wooden structure and aluminium body, before a switch to steel in 1950. Its name refers to its top speed of 120 mph (190 km/ h), making it the fastest production car in the world at the time. During a test drive in Belgium in 1949, a prototype even reached 217 km/ h. The model was available in three versions: roadster (OTS), coupé (FHC) and cabriolet (DHC). Its 3. 4-litre six-cylinder engine with twin camshafts produced 160 bhp, with a four-speed manual gearbox. The XK120 excelled in racing and endurance events, topping 100mph over 24 hours at Montlhéry, and one of the first cars was delivered to actor Clark Gable.
