HISTORY OF THE VEHICLE It was presented in October 1991 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It replaced the 944, of which it replaced 80% of the components, despite the apparent visual similarity. It was designed by Harm Lagaay, a Dutch designer, in a rounded style that contrasted with the sharp lines of the 944. However, it retains its proportions. The 16-inch 'Cup' alloy wheels and 'Cup' rear-view mirrors are part of the original equipment. Technically, this is a rear-wheel drive car with a chassis derived from the 944. The engine is located at the front and the gearbox on the rear axle, using the Transaxle principle. It develops 240 bhp at 6, 200 rpm and 31. 1 mkg of torque at 4, 100 rpm, is limited to 6, 500 rpm and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/ h in 6. 5 seconds. This 3-litre, water-cooled 4-cylinder engine - considered to be half the 8-cylinder of the Porsche 928 - had the special feature of variable camshaft timing to optimise torque at all engine speeds (a system known as 'Variocam').
