MERCEDES S-CLASS W126 300 SEL 1991 (2962 cc inline‑six)
The Mercedes‑Benz Type 126 is part of Mercedes‑Benz's flagship range of models.
Presented in September 1979 as the successor to the 116 models, the 126 is the second generation of the Mercedes‑Benz Sonderklasse, referring to the “special class.”
The Type 126 was initially offered with inline‑six petrol engines and V8s, and turbo diesel inline‑fives and inline‑sixes.
In September 1981, the 2‑door coupe versions, the C126, of the Type 126 were introduced.
Compared with the previous generation, the 126 is more aerodynamic, economical and powerful. It also embodies a new styling that was subsequently adopted across other models in the range.
The 126 series introduced several safety innovations, including the first standard airbag on a European car, pretensioner seat belts and traction control.
The 126 series was produced between 1979 and 1991, the longest‑running generation of the entire Sonderklasse since the mid‑1950s landmark models. The various models achieved a combined total of 892, 123 units sold (818, 063 saloons and 74, 060 coupes), making the Type 126 the most popular Sonderklasse ever produced.
Our example shown is the 1991 300 SEL Phase 3:
- Mainly improved inside, with brushed door panels and redesigned seats, they differ on the outside by more muted colour combinations between the bodywork and the side mouldings. The end of the model is near, but sales remain strong as its replacement is delayed. Mercedes therefore continues to evolve this flagship model, thanks to technologies planned for other models in its range, including the revolutionary SL R129. The passenger airbag becomes optional, as does the controlled suspension. The catalytic converter is now standard, reducing the power of the 560SEL to 279 hp. Fortunately, a Power Increase option (code 822) allows reclaiming twenty. Notably, an interesting 500 Hi‑Po version at 265 hp, whose performance is comparable to a standard 5. 5‑litre. Finally, to crown the success of the 560, it becomes available in SE short‑wheelbase form. Only 1, 252 units were produced.
Among the many options, the Type 126 offered memory seats, Webasto programmable stationary heater, hydraulic suspension, Tempomat cruise control with automatic descent correction, a portable fridge installed in the boot, the rear bench with electric reclining and heating or even two individual rear seats, ASR traction control, the multifunction on‑board computer, an electrically adjustable steering column, and various telephony devices. Not to mention the individual equipment of the Sonderklasse variants.
Our example was imported from the United States in 2017 with no change of ownership; it was not until 2022 that it was sold through SAGA CLASSIC to its current owner.
