The History:
In 1971, the BMW 2800 CS, already tested, was replaced by the new 3. 0 CS and 3. 0 CSI models, with engine displacement increased to 2986 cm³. While the former retained carburettor feeding to deliver 180 hp, the latter adopted mechanical injection allowing it to reach 200 hp.
The 3. 0 CSL (the “L” meaning leicht, i. e. light) used the 180 hp carburettor engine, like the CS, and was distinguished by chrome wheel arches, slimmer black-painted bumpers and a black adhesive side stripe. The interior, with the exception of the leather-and-fabric sport seats and the racing-style steering wheel, remained identical to that of the standard versions. However, the essential difference resided in the reduced weight thanks to the use of aluminium for the bodyshell and Plexiglas for the glazing, making the car ideal for competition.
When the CS was shown to the public, Road & Track described it as “probably the world’s most sophisticated inline-six.” Although designed as a fast and comfortable grand tourer, the 3. 0 CSL established itself as one of the most capable racing coupes of all time. A special version of the 3. 0 CSL was homologated to participate in the European Touring Car Championship, which greatly reinforced BMW’s reputation as a maker of sporting cars thanks to the numerous titles won.
A total of 1, 200 examples were produced between 1971 and 1975.
An extraordinarily beautiful car, in an almost-new condition.
This car is in exceptional condition, both in terms of bodywork and mechanics, having recently been restored and repainted in its superb original Inka colour. The mouldings, trim, seals, exterior mirrors, handles, bumpers, badges and the 3. 0 CSL livery have all been replaced or restored.
The engine has also been completely rebuilt, including replacement of exhaust pipes and the silencer. Today, this car delivers power and performance in line with the original, in spectacular fashion. The original alloy wheels are immaculate and fitted with new tyres.
The interior instrumentation, including the original three-spoke steering wheel wrapped in leather, is original and in perfect condition. Inside, the restored black leather seats with matching fabric stand out, as do the recently restored door panels. The cabin floor also features new carpets and mats.
