In September 1953, Daimler‑Benz’s US importer, Max Hoffman, managed to persuade the Stuttgart parent company to set its sights on designing two new models of genuine sports cars derived from the very sporty 300 SL (gullwing) coupé, which, by winning the Carrera Panamericana, had drawn particularly special attention from Americans.
Moreover, Hoffman wished to complete a Mercedes‑Benz lineup that had hitherto been very conservative. To that end, the parent company, in collaboration with its American subsidiary, decided to create two cabriolets: a cabriolet version of the 300SL gullwing and a smaller one, the 190SL, marketed as a “sports‑tourer” to offer practical daily usability.
The 190 SL shown here is a 1956 model, fully restored to a very high standard in 2008.
At the time of restoration it was decided to replace the original engine, which was broken, with a newer and more powerful unit.
The choice fell on an 1980s Mercedes 190 engine, a nod to the model of the same name; it was stripped of its injection in favour of two Weber carburettors so as not to distort the very essence of this old model.
The power increase is welcome on this model, which, as a result, can lay claim to performance worthy of its noble and sporty lines.
