Description
JAGUAR XK120 DROPHEAD COUPE We present to you a European specimen remarkably restored by Atelier des Coteaux. Equipped with Type C cylinder head and a 5‑speed gearbox. Shown at the London Motor Show in 1948, the Jaguar XK120 revolutionised the automotive industry by instantly becoming the fastest production car in the world. If the Roadster (OTS) aimed for pure performance, the Drophead Coupé (DHC) launched in 1953, of which our example is part, embodies the pinnacle of luxury and refinement. With its rising windows, double-lined hood and its interior in precious wood, it offers an unrivalled driving experience. This example is distinguished by an optimised mechanical configuration (C-Type head, 5‑speed) and a prestigious provenance, making it a rare opportunity for the most discerning collectors. The addition of the 5‑speed gearbox and the Type C head transfigures the pleasure of driving, making this 1950s icon perfectly usable in modern traffic or for long historic tours. HISTORY AND MAINTENANCE: The history is clear and demonstrates constant care: FIRST-RATE ORIGIN: This example was the property of Jean-Louis Ricci, a renowned racing driver with 12 appearances at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the grandson of the famous couturière Nina Ricci. ORIGIN: Unlike most examples circulating today sourced from the American market, this XK120 is a rare European-delivery original. This pedigree, certified by the Jaguar Heritage Trust, guarantees an authentic configuration and a history exclusively continental. HISTORY: Only three owners since new. Sold in 1997 to a physician from Poissy, it was acquired by the current owner in 2023. Note that the vehicle was selected and listed in the catalogue of the prestigious auction house Aguttes in the same year. RESTORATION: The car underwent a high‑quality total restoration: the mechanicals were entrusted to Atelier des Coteaux (02) while the bodywork underwent a complete “body‑off” rebuild and full painting by a Normandy specialist. RECENT WORKS Since 2023, significant finishing and optimisation work has been undertaken to perfect the car: BRAKING SYSTEM: Complete overhaul, relined drums and replacement of the handbrake cable. INTERIOR: Fully re-trimmed in blue leather by Aldridge Trimming (UK). Complete restoration of the woodwork in ash burr (dashboard and trim). MECHANICS: Fitting of a discreet electronic ignition (integrated into the original distributor) and fine carburation tuning. COOLING: Addition of an extra electric fan to optimise thermal regulation, ensuring reliable use even in dense traffic conditions. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS ENGINE: Inline six, 3. 4L, fitted with a Type C head (210–216 hp), offering a significant increase in power and torque over the standard model. FUEL SYSTEM: Two SU HD6 diaphragm carburettors. This technical evolution, more reliable and performing than the original setup, ensures stable fuelling and easier starts, fully exploiting the Type C head’s potential. TRANSMISSION: Getrag 5‑speed gearbox, a major improvement for on‑road comfort (flexibility and lower engine rpm). TYRES: Blockley tubeless (185 VR 16 93V) on 16‑inch steel wheels with original chrome hubcaps. MILEAGE: 77, 850 miles on the odometer. EQUIPMENT AND PRESENTATION The bodywork is presented in an elegant Pacific Blue, with meticulous fit and finish. The car is fitted with its “spats” (rear wheel skirts), characteristic of the original line. It is equipped with Lucas P700 “Tripod” headlamps, reinforcing the historical character and the visual signature of the front end. The interior faithfully respects period standards with blue leather upholstery and newly fitted floor coverings. Hood in blue alpaca accompanied by its hood cover (tonneau cover), essential for protection when folded. The storage space in the boot includes its spare wheel. DOCUMENTATION Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate (No. 73455) Expert appraisal: 2022 expert report valuing the vehicle at €115, 000. Technical inspection: favourable (2023), French classic vehicle registration. MINOR REPORTED FLAWS Very light signs of rubbing to be noted on the hood canvas, due to movement of the structure when it is folded without its tonneau cover. The vehicle is fitted with a non-original radio (a more recent model)...
