"Exciting recommissioning project with attractive estimate!"
In 1968, Citroën buys Maserati, then in financial difficulty... The firm with the chevron is looking for a noble engine for the future **: a 2. 7l V6 is developed by Giulio Alfieri to meet these specifications. To relaunch Maserati, it was decided to upgrade this block to 3 l, to create the future sports car of the range: the Merak, based on the Bora.
The Merak's V6 may be smaller than the Bora's V8, but it's more economical and better balanced. Coupled with Citroën equipment (steering, hydropneumatic suspension, etc.), the Merak was a solid performer for its time! Success was not enough to keep Maserati afloat, and it was sold to Alejandro de Tomaso in 1976. 7 years later, the Merak was discontinued after 1, 800 units had been produced.
Our Merak was rediscovered in 1991 in Ontario. It was imported in 2016 by its current owner, an important Parisian collector who had fallen in love with the lines of this sumptuous berlinette!
Today, our example is still awaiting a comprehensive restoration to get it back on the road. Traces of old restoration work are visible on the car, including a fairly good quality old paint job, but the interior appears to be original, and the odometer, in kilometers, seems to indicate a Canadian provenance. Today, the car is complete and sound, and is just waiting for a courageous enthusiast to give it the care it deserves.
Meraks are absolutely mythical cars, and a pleasure to drive. Where examples in working order sell for around €50, 000, our example, in need of some mechanical attention, is presented with a very attractive estimate!
