The Lancia Flaminia was born as a large luxury saloon with imposing dimensions. Its engine comes from the 2, 500 cc V6 of the Aurelia that it replaces. Very well finished, technically accomplished, the Flaminia is what is commonly called a “Grande Voiture.” Lancia dedicates to coachbuilders a shortened Flaminia platform, available in two wheelbases: 2. 52 m for the two-seater and 2. 75 m for the 4/ 5-seater. Zagato is responsible for the production of the “Sport” version with aerodynamic bodywork. Touring handles the “GT” Grand Touring version, a splendid coupé also available as a cabriolet and later as a 2+2.
The master Pininfarina took care of the Coupé, from 1959, a luxurious two-door car with 4/ 5 seats and exemplary finish. The first version develops 119 hp (3, 201 units produced) and is replaced in 1962 by the 3B, a 128 hp version with triple-carburettor (950 units). The last version will adopt the 2, 800 cc engine and 140 hp (1, 085 units).
The Flaminia chassis is an evolution of the Aurelia’s, but it has been considerably improved. The front suspension was redesigned for a more conventional layout with double wishbones, coil springs, telescopic dampers and an anti-roll bar. The rear suspension retained the De Dion arrangement, with a differential mounted at the rear as in the Aurelia. The first Berlina was available with drum brakes or discs, while all other models used discs only. They benefited from Pirelli Cinturato radial tyres 165H400 CA67.
The two original bodies of the Flaminia were developed by Pinin Farina and modelled after his two salon specials based on the Aurelia, called Florida. Florida I, shown at the Turin Motor Show in 1955, was a saloon with suicide doors at the rear. Florida II, shown a year later at the Geneva International Motor Show, was a two-door coupé, and became Battista Farina’s personal car. The production version of the Lancia Flaminia appeared in 1957.
This Lancia Flaminia was produced in 1960, and registered in Italy in the same year. Four owners succeeded in Italy up to 2018, each having kept this Flaminia for many years. The first owner kept it from 1960 to 1964, the second from 1964 to 1969, the third from 1969 to 1982, the fourth from 1982 to 2018. The last bought it in 2018 and has kept it in their private collection for the last six years. It has undergone major restoration in recent years, namely:
- Engine overhaul
- Replacement of front brake assemblies and various pipes
- New paint (but with defects)
- Leather upholstery and red leather trim on the new doors
- New floor carpeting
- New exhaust
The chassis and bodywork are in good condition. During the restoration of the bodywork and chassis about a decade ago, repairs were carried out and a chassis protection was installed. The paint is bright and nice, but shows defects. Note a few stone chips and some touch-ups on scratches.
