Description
History of the Glas Hans Glas was one of the most innovative car manufacturers of the 1950s and 1960s. The Glas company of Dingolfing built the legendary Goggomobil and thereby motorised a whole generation in the 1950s. Hans Glas answered the call for more sportiness, comfort and a touch of extravagance by collaborating with the legendary automobile designer Pietro Frua. Frua designed and built the bodies for the great V8 Glas coupé and the adorable Glas GT coupés and convertibles. Glas offered 1300 and 1700 versions of these aesthetically classy four-cylinders. Unfortunately, due to high production costs, none of these models achieved major commercial success and they ultimately led to the takeover of Glas’s Dingolfing factories by BMW in 1966. To this day, new BMW vehicles are still manufactured in the former Glas factories which have in the meantime been converted and modernised. History & condition of the BMW 1700 GT Cabriolet offered here Only 122 examples of the 1700 GT Cabriolet, much more expensive, were built by Glas. The history of the GT 1700 Cabriolet offered here is perfectly documented. The old German cardboard registration document is still available and tells a turbulent story with 3 previous owners in the early years. This original 1700 was first registered in Germany on 19. 04. 1966. The registration and decommissioning took place at the end of the 1970s. At some point, this vehicle fell into the hands of a keen Glas enthusiast and BMW dealer in southern Germany. A restoration period of almost 10 years followed during which this special vehicle was rebuilt piece by piece. A binder with various subcontractor invoices and a complete photographic documentation of the restoration are available. The result: an uncompromising reconstruction with many small improvements, such as head-restraint seats (the original seats are still available), or the conversion to 12 volts. Here, no expense was spared. In 2022, the jewel was sold to a renowned Hamburg lawyer who, for health reasons, decided to part with this perfect glass. The condition is like “new out of the egg”. Since its restoration, this charming cabriolet has been used only sporadically for local classic car events and is therefore in fantastically new condition. The 1. 7‑ litre, 100 hp engine is powerful and easily adapts to the GLAS GT’s 1200 kg curb weight. The gear change is precise and the braking system behaves very responsively. The hood and tonneau covers are also in as-new condition. We have never before had the opportunity in our workshops to retain a GLAS cabriolet so perfectly restored. Currently, this Glas GT carries German registration papers, including the historic vehicle registration certificate. Summary This GLAS GT 1700 Cabriolet is a little jewel that excites wherever it goes. A cabriolet of great rarity, but a classic that will never lose its charm.
