The Ferrari Mondial was in production from 1980 to 1993 and was the successor to the Ferrari Dino 308 GT4. In unveiling the Mondial, Ferrari paid tribute to the glorious victories they had on the circuit as 'the Scuderia'. The Mondial featured angular, thus pragmatic, styling, making it Ferrari's entry-level model at the time. Today, it is regarded as a true classic among Ferraris.
It was Pininfarina to whom Ferrari entrusted the task of designing the Mondial. They created a sports car that could comfortably accommodate four people. It wasn’t an easy feat, but Pininfarina accomplished it with ease, even leaving room for 'flying wings' that improved aerodynamics. Miraculously, they even managed to house the engine between the wheels while accommodating four passengers. This was achieved by turning the V8 engine a quarter-turn and mounting it transversely, which gave the car exceptional agility.
In 1982, after two years of production, a 32-valve engine version was introduced, with four valves per cylinder instead of two. The new ‘Quattrovalvole’, Italian for ‘four valves’, produced more torque and power and was powered by the same five-speed manual gearbox as before, which suited the Mondial perfectly. The shift pattern followed the dog-leg principle, where the second and third gears, as well as the fourth and fifth gears, faced each other to ease gear changes during racing. In 1983, Ferrari launched a spacious cabriolet version, which was the only four-seat mid-mounted engine convertible ever built.
In 1985, the 3. 0-litre engine was enlarged to 3. 2 litres, in line with the Ferrari 328, which used the same engine. This variant was officially called the 'Mondial 3. 2'. A final edition arrived in 1988 under the name 'Mondial t', with a longitudinal engine layout while retaining the transversely mounted transmission. The 't' version kept the same V8 engine but increased displacement once more to 3. 4 litres.
Mondial production continued until 1993, with a total of 6, 149 units produced. This unique car, although it did not have a direct successor, goes down in history as the last Ferrari four-seater with a mid-mounted V8.
