Predecessor of MG roadsters
The MG T-Type is a series of five sports cars built from 1936 to 1955. The T-Type was the forerunner to post-war British roadsters, particularly the MG A. The T-Type gave MG entry to the United States, where sales took off.
In 1936, MG introduced a successor to the iconic, though rather austere, P-Type, the TA. It was somewhat larger and more modern than its predecessor. The TA was produced from 1936 to 1939 and was followed by the TB, of which only 379 were built by 1940 due to the Second World War.
During World War II, MG decided to diversify its production. Rather than limiting itself to making cars, they stopped car production and began supplying weapons, producing aircraft components and maintaining war tanks. They continued these activities until 1945, when peace returned and MG resumed car production. The third model in the series was the MG TC, the first MG after the war and the successor to the TB. The TC had higher engine compression, larger dimensions and more interior space. Although it was right-hand drive exclusively, the TC sold very well in the United States and MG TC production lasted until 1950. It became MG’s best-selling car with more than 10, 000 units sold.
Following the logical progression, the TC was replaced by the TD and, typically, the TD was a charming roadster that brought many updates. The TD underwent so many technical and mechanical changes that it was easily recognisable compared with its predecessors. Seen as somewhat progressive in mechanics, the TD became the best-selling T-Type car, even a Mk II version was introduced, offering more power and improved suspension. The MG TD was produced until 1953.
The MG TF is the last model of the MG T-Type series and was built from 1953. To conclude a long career of almost two decades, MG designed a brand-new roadster as TD sales began to fall and its pre-war design had become obsolete. The TF had a more aerodynamic look, giving it a sportier appearance. The mechanics remained largely unchanged, but in 1954 a more powerful engine was introduced. However, it turned out to be in vain, as the world eagerly awaited the arrival of the true British roadsters, which arrived in 1955 with the MG A.
MG TF
The MG TF was produced from 1953 to 1955 and represents the apex of British roadsters. Mechanically, it stayed exactly the same as its predecessor, the TD, while the exterior design underwent significant changes, giving it a sportier edge. The car was initially equipped with a 1250 cc engine, just like the TD, and in 1954 a slightly more powerful 1466 cc engine was also available. Both models are beloved by enthusiasts.
The MG TF embodies the essence of British motoring. As a forerunner of true British roadsters, it has captivated all lovers of classic cars. Additionally, there are only around 10, 000 ever produced, making it a relatively rare model.
