Description
Some cars are more than just cars. They deliver an answer. In this case, to the question thousands of Americans were asking in the 1950s: “Can I recapture a bit of the magic of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL without having to take out a second mortgage and wear a racing helmet?”
A call from the visionary American importer Max Hoffman to Stuttgart set it all in motion. The result? The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL. Not a compromise, but a class of its own: less brutal than the 300 SL, but more elegant, more accessible and — as we later discovered — just as desirable.
Premiered at the New York International Auto Show, it was billed as the continental jewel for the weekend driver. A year later it shone in Geneva, and Europe — but above all America — was won over.
Between 1955 and 1963, just over 25, 000 examples were produced by Mercedes-Benz.
That 1961 example has not only stood the test of time, it has emerged even more beautiful.
Imported from the United States to the Netherlands in 1992, it immediately fell into the hands of a true enthusiast. No multiple re-sales across ten countries: a single owner since importation. That says a lot.
And for those who still doubt: it has been continuously maintained by the Mercedes specialist Van Dijk. No amateur tinkering, no escapades in generic garages — only expert hands.
In 2020 it benefited from a cosmetic restoration. The bodywork was stripped to bare metal and repainted in its original colour: Hellblau. Not just blue, but the kind of blue that makes you wonder why modern cars are still offered in standard colours.
The chrome? Either new or rechromed to achieve a shine worthy of German jewellery and Italian sunglasses.
Interior? Completely redone in the right hues, with those gorgeous wood inserts that give the 190 SL its incomparable elegance.
Matching numbers, matching colors, matching everything.
Undoubtedly one of the most correct, elegant and refined 190 SLs you will find in Europe.
See you soon?
