Description
The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is a perfect example of how listening to customer feedback can shape automotive history.
After the launch of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, a shrewd American Mercedes dealer noticed that, despite the huge enthusiasm for the model, its price made it out of reach for those seeking a weekend sports car.
Stuttgart reacted quickly: in the same year, the 190 SL — built on the Ponton platform — was unveiled at the New York Motor Show.
Twelve months later, the production version debuted in Geneva.
Interestingly, Mercedes had never intended to design the 190 SL as a genuine pure sports car, but rather as an elegant two-seat grand tourer roadster.
The formula proved a resounding success, with more than 25, 000 units produced between 1955 and 1963.
Our example has a fascinating and perfectly documented history.
This car was first registered in the United States in 1962 and remained in the hands of its first owner for many years. Between 1975 and 2008, all annual inspections and Virginia state maintenance invoices were carefully preserved — an exceptionally rare level of traceability.
After arriving in the Netherlands, the car underwent a complete restoration, with every component redone, and was repainted in its superb original colour: Hellblau. The result is simply outstanding.
This exemplar brings together all the desirable qualities and is ready to be enjoyed immediately. A rare opportunity to own one of Mercedes-Benz's most elegant and desirable classics.
