Description
The Mercedes R107 300 SL that we’re presenting to you comes from our continent Europe, more precisely from Italy.
In 1971, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the replacement for its image icon: the SL type R107. The Pagoda roof is gone, but the SL still carries its hard-top, a hallmark of the SL line. But more than the car itself, the SL type R107 symbolises for an entire generation an image of American-style success. All the most famous characters, clichés of American success, are seen in films or TV series behind the wheel of an R107: Bobby Ewing in Dallas, Richard Gere in American Gigolo, Jonathan Hart in Hart to Hart, and even Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop. A true four-wheeled star, fully claimed by Mercedes-Benz.
Admittedly, the Pagoda roof, so characteristic of the previous generation, has been ditched. But the SL R107 line is still complemented by an exquisitely elegant hard-top. It is fully removable, but very heavy to handle. It takes two to fit and remove it.
The SL’s profile is impeccably clean, although one can notice a slight disproportion between the very short front and rear ends. That dating gives this starry roadster a touch of vintage charm that we quite like.
Our 1987 example underwent a full repaint about ten years ago.
Its engine is original, a three-litre six-cylinder unit delivering 180 bhp with smooth, quiet power.
It is equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission.
The interior has been fully restored by a renowned professional in the region, including the upholstery, door panels and carpets.
The former owner had restored the dashboard wood trim.
Recent work includes rear brake pads and calipers, oil change and other filters.
The fuel tank is new.
The hard-top is available; the seals have been renewed. The soft top is in very good condition.
Note a few scratches in the paint around the hard-top mounting, and scratches on the front bumper; overall in very good condition, and the interior is sumptuous.
The registration is normal, the MOT is favourable; it is ready to cruise with its new owner.
